Multimodal-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence Security Materials

Qi Guo et al.

Summary: In order to combat the increasing global counterfeiting, it is necessary to develop advanced anti-counterfeiting tags with unusual optical characters and complex security features, which has not yet been achieved. This study designs a stable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) material that achieves multimodal-responsive, interactive/changeable information encryption-decryption, resembling a proof-of-principle blockchain-like integrated anticounterfeiting system. The obtained security materials are further encapsulated into a fiber to expand their functionality to flexible fabrics, creating an intelligent textile with color-adaptable function along with environmental change.

Anomalous circularly polarized light emission in organic light-emitting diodes caused by orbital-momentum locking

Li Wan et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered that the handedness of circularly polarized light in OLEDs can be switched by reversing the current flow. This direction-dependent emission greatly increases the polarization rate and addresses the issue of symmetry loss in CP-OLEDs. The anomalous CP emission is attributed to the topological electronic property known as orbital-momentum locking in chiral materials.

Helical polymers for dissymmetric circularly polarized light imaging

Inho Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and powerful method was used to fabricate chiroptical flexible layers through supramolecular helical ordering of conjugated polymer chains. The multiscale chirality and optical activity of these layers can be varied across a broad spectral range by chiral templating. After template removal, chromophores remain in one-dimensional helical nanofibrils, producing a homogeneous chiroptical layer with drastically enhanced polarization-dependent absorbance, enabling well-resolved detection and visualization of the spin angular momentum (SAM) of photons. This study provides a scalable path towards on-chip detection of the spin degree of freedom of photons necessary for encoded quantum information processing and high-resolution polarization imaging.

Photo-triggered full-color circularly polarized luminescence based on photonic capsules for multilevel information encryption

Siyang Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of device-friendly solid films with color tunability by utilizing Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms consisting of chiral donors and achiral molecular switches in liquid crystal photonic capsules (LCPCs). These LCPCs exhibit photoswitchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from blue emission to RGB trichromatic signals under UV irradiation, showing strong time dependence due to different FRET efficiencies at each time node. Based on these properties, the concept of multilevel data encryption using LCPC films is demonstrated.

Induced CPL-Active Materials Based on Chiral Supramolecular Co-Assemblies

Yuxia Zhang et al.

Summary: Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has gained significant interest for its potential applications in chiral photonic techniques and optoelectronic materials science. The dissymmetry factor (g(em)) plays an essential role in evaluating the properties of CPL-active materials. Recent studies have shown that chiral supramolecular co-assemblies can effectively enhance the g(em) value through the ordered helical superstructure of chiral building blocks. The chirality transfer and induction mechanism in this assembly process promote the amplification effect of induced CPL in achiral dyes.

Liquid Crystal Assembly for Ultra-dissymmetric Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Beyond

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is a phenomenon that can carry extensive optical information and provide an extra dimension of information compared to regular light. Chiral liquid crystal (LC) assemblies, known as cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs), are highly ordered one-dimensional structures that can achieve molecule-scale chirality on a helical pitch. This makes LC assembly an ideal strategy for amplifying chirality and enabling ultra-dissymmetric CPL. This perspective discusses the generation, transmission, and modulation of CPL using chiral LC assembly, aiming to design and develop novel chiroptical materials. Recent applications of CPL-active LC microstructures in three-dimensional displays, circularly polarized lasers, and asymmetric catalysis are also highlighted.

Yuxia Zhang et al.

Summary: Chiral supramolecular assembly can regulate the helical nanofibers to achieve circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) behavior of pyrenyl emitters in achiral liquid crystal polymers. Interestingly, the chiral co-assembly (R/S-M)(0.1)-(P3)(0.9) emitted an inverted blue-colored CPL signal during thermal annealing treatment, which was due to the flexible main chain of the LC polymer (LC-P3).

Double helical π-aggregate nanoarchitectonics for amplified circularly polarized luminescence

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a selective-recognized and chirality-matched co-assembly strategy was used to fabricate fluorescent pi-amino acids into double helical pi-aggregates with exceptional strong circularly polarized luminescence. The double-stranded helical organization of these pi-amino acids was cooperatively assisted by both CH-pi and hydrogen-bond arrays with chirality match. The well-defined spatial arrangement effectively suppressed non-radiative decay pathways and facilitated chiral exciton couplings, resulting in superior CPL.

Direct Visualization of Chiral Amplification of Chiral Aggregation Induced Emission Molecules in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Qing Xia et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic exploration of chiral amplification of chiral aggregation induced emission (AIE) molecules in liquid crystals (LCs) from direct visualization of their co-assemblies at the nano scale to theoretical calculation of the molecular packing modes on a single molecular level. The direct visualization using AFM imaging revealed that chiral AIE molecules self-assembled into helical fibers to serve as the helical template for LCs to bind, forming co-assemblies with morphologies of pearled necklaces or thick rods. Theoretical calculations suggested that chiral AIE molecules were packed into left-handed helical fibers with empty space between neighboring molecules, providing binding sites for LCs.
