One Atom Can Make All the Difference: Gas-Induced Phase Transformations in Bisimidazole-Linked Diamondoid Coordination Networks

Kyriaki Koupepidou et al.

Summary: In this study, two coordination networks (CNs), X-dia-4-Co and X-dia-5-Co, undergo gas-induced transformations from closed to open structures with at least a 27% increase in cell volume. Although they only differ by one atom in their N-donor linkers, their pore chemistry and switching mechanisms show pronounced differences. Insight into these differences is provided through various experimental and computational techniques.

Multivariate Flexible Framework with High Usable Hydrogen Capacity in a Reduced Pressure Swing Process

Arijit Halder et al.

Summary: Step-shaped adsorption-desorption of gaseous payloads by flexible metal-organic frameworks can facilitate the delivery of large usable capacities with reduced energetic penalties. The multivariate linker approach is a powerful tool for tuning the phase change behavior of flexible frameworks. In this work, a multivariate framework was developed with a considerably reduced threshold pressure and desirable adsorption-desorption profile for efficient storage and delivery of weakly physisorbing species.

Reversible transformations between the non-porous phases of a flexible coordination network enabled by transient porosity

Varvara I. Nikolayenko et al.

Summary: Flexible metal-organic materials capable of stimulus-induced switching between closed and open structures show potential application in gas storage and separation. A clathrate coordination network is demonstrated to undergo gas-induced switching between multiple phases through transient porosity, allowing diffusion of guests between discrete voids. The material shows reversible switching between guest-free and gas-loaded phases, and the diffusion mechanism is elucidated using in situ X-ray diffraction and computational methods.

Self-Adjusting Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Capture of Trace Xenon and Krypton

Zheng Niu et al.

Summary: This study reports a self-adjusting metal-organic framework based on multiple weak binding interactions for capturing trace amounts of xenon and krypton from nuclear reprocessing off-gas. The self-adjusting behavior of ATC-Cu and its mechanism have been visualized and studied. The results show that ATC-Cu exhibits unprecedented high uptake capacities and record xenon capture capability from the nuclear reprocessing off-gas. This work not only provides a benchmark xenon adsorbent, but also proposes a new route for constructing smart materials for efficient separations.

Configurational Entropy Driven High-Pressure Behaviour of a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)

Pia Vervoorts et al.

Summary: Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit large structural flexibility with temperature or pressure variations, which is of high technological and scientific significance. The targeted design of flexible MOFs requires control over macroscopic thermodynamics determined by microscopic chemical interactions, presenting a challenge. This study reveals configurational entropy from linker side-chain modifications as a crucial factor in determining the thermodynamics of flexible MOFs, offering a new perspective on accessing the free energy landscape in MOFs.

Crystal Flexibility Design through Local and Global Motility Cooperation

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: Incorporating local mobility into a flexible framework through intra-framework pi-pi interactions offers a new approach to flexible porous coordination polymers (PCPs) design. This strategy enables structural transitions and different guest-free structures in PCPs under activation conditions. The flexibility incorporated allows for discrimination of C6 alkane isomers based on gate-opening behaviors, with potential applications in isomer separation for high octane gasoline production.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are known for their precise control of structures and functions on a molecular level, but designing local flexibility in the MOF framework for dynamic molecular sieving remains challenging. A newly reported MOF material, JNU-3a, features one-dimension channels with embedded molecular pockets that can selectively adsorb propylene and propane under different pressures, showcasing the potential of dynamic molecular sieving.

The chemistry and applications of flexible porous coordination polymers

Nibedita Behera et al.

Summary: Flexible porous coordination polymers (PCPs) have made significant progress since the late 1990s, with various architectures recognized and promising applications identified. The unique ability of PCPs to respond to external stimuli and adjust to new environments in a tuneable fashion is a key attribute that sets them apart from other porous solids. However, accurately building these structures with the required functions remains a new challenge.

Shi-Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: Coordination networks (CNs) are crystalline solids composed of metal ions or cluster nodes connected by organic and/or inorganic linkers, with a subset of soft CNs capable of reversible structural transformations when exposed to gases, vapours or liquids. These soft CNs exhibit both rigid structures and switching properties, showing potential for storage and separation applications.
