Self-Assembling Behaviour of Perylene, Perylene Diimide, and Thionated Perylene Diimide Deciphered through Non-Covalent Interactions

Sanjukta Parida et al.

Summary: The pi-conjugated supramolecular polymers have gained popularity in materials chemistry and biomedicine due to their self-assembling behavior. This study provides a detailed account of the electronic structure and bonding through quantum theory and non-covalent interactions in oligomers of perylene, perylene diimide, and thionated-PDI. The analysis reveals the presence of electrostatic interactions playing a crucial role in the self-assembly process.

Development of non-fullerene electron acceptors for efficient organic photovoltaics

Qiao He et al.

Summary: Compared to fullerene-based electron acceptors, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) offer advantages in terms of tunable optical absorption and energy levels, strong absorption in the visible region, and morphological stability for flexible electronic devices. The design and synthesis of new NFAs have contributed to higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, reaching around 19%. This review highlights important breakthroughs in three classes of NFAs, namely perylene diimide (PDI), diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), and acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) based NFAs. The PCEs reported for PDI, DPP, and A-D-A series based non-fullerene OPVs are up to 11%, 13%, and 19%, respectively. The structure-property relationships of representative NFAs and their impact on OPV performances are discussed, along with the remaining challenges and promising directions for achieving high-performing NFAs.

Progress in perylene diimides for organic solar cell applications

Jin Cao et al.

Summary: Compared to fullerene materials, non-fullerene acceptor materials have been widely used in organic solar cells due to their optical properties and the ease of tuning their electronic energy levels. Recent developments have shown significant improvements in power conversion efficiency (PCE) levels for non-fullerene acceptor materials, with PCE levels now exceeding 20%. Perylene diimide (PDI), a non-fullerene acceptor material, has been extensively studied for its excellent transmission capacity and strong electron affinity.
