Cooperative Supramolecular Polymerization of Triphenylamine bis-Urea Macrocycles

Rahul Prakash et al.

Summary: In this study, the hydrogen bond-driven self-assembly of a triphenylamine (TPA) bis-urea macrocycle in the presence and absence of guests was investigated. The assembly behavior and structural characteristics were analyzed using various spectroscopic and microscopy techniques. The results indicate that the function and utility of these supramolecular systems can be modulated by the selection of suitable monomers.

Bioinspired crowding directs supramolecular polymerisation

Nils Baeumer et al.

Summary: Crowding effects play a crucial role in the functionality of biological systems, but their role in artificial systems has been largely unexplored. In this study, the authors demonstrate that crowding effects have a strong and distinct control on the kinetics, pathways, and outcomes of supramolecular polymerization processes. The presence of a pre-formed supramolecular polymer as a crowding agent causes a model supramolecular polymer to undergo a morphological transformation in its self-assembly behavior, resulting in flower-like hierarchical assemblies. These results highlight the potential of accessing diverse morphologies and properties in supramolecular polymers by leveraging crowding effects.

Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Austin M. Evans et al.

Summary: Synthetic chemists have developed various methods to synthesize molecules, polymers, and networks, but have long lacked the ability to prepare two-dimensional polymers from designed monomers. Recent advances in polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged, producing 2DPs as either monolayers or multilayer assemblies.

Complete Dynamic Phase Diagram of a Supramolecular Polymer

Nikolaos A. Burger et al.

Summary: This study revisits the equilibrium phase diagram of the model supramolecular polymer EHUT in nonpolar solvents and uncovers a richer behavior with four distinct regimes. By combining rheology and microrheology, the complete dynamic phase diagram of EHUT in dodecane is established, revealing three dynamic states of the tube structure at different concentrations. The findings provide insights into investigating other supramolecular polymers with tunable rheology and understanding one-dimensional self-assembled structures.

Thermoreversible Polymorph Transitions in Supramolecular Polymers of Hydrogen-Bonded Squaramides

Sergi Bujosa et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-bonded squaramide (SQ) supramolecular polymers exhibit uncommon thermoreversible polymorph transitions between particle- and fiber-like nanostructures. The transitions are triggered by the molecular reorganization of the SQ units changing from slipped to head-to-tail hydrogen bonding patterns. These transitions have concentration-dependent and kinetic characteristics, and are of interest in developing stimuli-responsive systems.

From Incident Light to Persistent and Regenerable Radicals of Urea-Assembled Benzophenone Frameworks: A Structural Investigation

Dustin W. Goodlett et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of crystalline structure on benzophenone photophysics and self-quenching, highlighting the emergence of persistent triplet radical pairs in solid-state assembly. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis compares two sets of constitutional isomers, revealing differences in photogenerated radical half-lives. The findings suggest that microenvironment surrounding benzophenone largely dictates the favorability of self-quenching or radical formation.
