Photoreforming of Waste Polymers for Sustainable Hydrogen Fuel and Chemicals Feedstock: Waste to Energy

Muhammad Ashraf et al.

Summary: Renewable energy is crucial for environmental sustainability, and sunlight-driven fuel synthesis through water splitting is a sustainable and economical method. However, the water oxidation half-reaction in photocatalytic water splitting is challenging and requires designer photocatalysts. Photoreforming can address these challenges and convert waste plastics and biomass into valuable organic products for H2 production. This article provides an overview of photoreforming, including its mechanisms and the use of different polymer wastes as substrates for photocatalysts.

Efficient Hydrogen Production by a Photoredox Cascade Catalyst Comprising Dual Photosensitizers and a Transparent Electron Mediator

Nobutaka Yoshimura et al.

Summary: One-directional electron transport is crucial for efficient Z-scheme water-splitting photocatalysis. A photoredox cascade catalyst was synthesized to mimic natural photosynthesis's electron transport chain, using Pt-TiO2 nanoparticle catalyst, two photosensitizers (RuCP6 and RuP6), and a visible-light-transparent electron mediator (HCRu). The catalyst, named PRCC-1, exhibited the highest initial apparent quantum yield (iAQY = 2.23%) among dye-sensitized TiO2 photocatalysts, and successfully produced hydrogen using hydroquinone monosulfonate as the hydrogen source.

Aqueous Biphasic Dye-Sensitized Photosynthesis Cells for TEMPO-Based Oxidation of Glycerol

Didjay F. Bruggeman et al.

Summary: This study reports a dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cell that is capable of oxidizing glycerol and producing hydrogen. The use of a redox-gel layer with a high potential dye-sensitized mesoporous TiO2 photoanode protects the photoanode from degradation and significantly improves the conversion rate of glycerol. The redox-gel protected photoanode also demonstrates stable photocurrent over extended periods of continuous operation.

Photofunctional molecular assembly for artificial photosynthesis: Beyond a simple dye sensitization strategy

Atsushi Kobayashi et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the photofunctional molecular assemblies on the surfaces of rigid semiconductors or soft lipid membranes to overcome backward reactions in Z-scheme water-splitting photocatalysis. Approaches based on the dye-sensitization mechanism can improve photoinduced charge-separation efficiency and regulate the reaction field and pathway in photocatalytic O-2 and H-2 evolution reactions, providing powerful techniques for improving photocatalytic activity.

Photoreforming of Lignocellulosic Biomass into Hydrogen under Sunlight in the Presence of Thermally Radiative CdS/SiC Composite Photocatalyst

Haruki Nagakawa et al.

Summary: The research has established an efficient protocol for hydrogen production from lignocellulosic biomass at high temperatures in an alkaline solution using a stable CdS/SiC composite. This composite absorbs light in the entire visible range, utilizing excited electrons for hydrogen production and efficient thermal radiation. More importantly, the apparent quantum yields obtained using this method are significantly higher than those obtained using conventional methods.
