Computational tools for the simulation and analysis of spin-polarized EPR spectra

Claudia E. Tait et al.

Summary: The EPR spectra of paramagnetic species induced by photoexcitation exhibit enhanced absorptive and emissive features resulting from sublevel populations that differ from thermal equilibrium. Simulation of the spin-polarized EPR spectra is crucial in characterizing the dynamics and properties of the photoexcited state. EasySpin now provides extended support for simulating spin-polarized EPR spectra of various spin multiplicities formed by different mechanisms.

Organic molecules with inverted singlet-triplet gaps

Jie Li et al.

Summary: According to Hund's multiplicity rule, the lowest excited triplet state of organic molecules is always lower in energy than the lowest excited singlet state, resulting in a positive singlet-triplet energy gap. However, some organic molecules violate this rule and have a negative energy gap, which has attracted significant attention. For molecules with a negative energy gap, reverse intersystem crossing can occur without thermal activation, potentially solving the issues of efficiency roll-off and short lifetime in organic light-emitting devices.

Direct detection of spin polarization in photoinduced charge transfer through a chiral bridge

Alberto Privitera et al.

Summary: We provide direct proof that time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) can be used to detect long-lived spin polarization generated by photoinduced charge transfer through a chiral bridge. This work lays the basis for the optical generation and direct manipulation of spin polarization induced by chirality.

Radical defects modulate the photocatalytic response in 2D-graphitic carbon nitride

Edoardo Raciti et al.

Summary: By using density functional theory calculations and experimental EPR measurements, the study reveals that structural defects on the gCN surface can create distinctive radical defect states that are essential for photo-activity in certain amorphous and reduced gCN structures. These defect types act as binding sites for specific radical precursors, facilitating photo-induced charge transfer and triggering specific photo-chemical processes for desired reactions.

Singlet-Triplet Excited-State Inversion in Heptazine and Related Molecules: Assessment of TD-DFT and ab initio Methods

G. Ricci et al.

Summary: The investigation on the origin of the S-1-T-1 energy levels inversion for heptazine and other N-doped pi-conjugated hydrocarbons found an unusually negative singlet-triplet energy gap (Delta EST <0). Various methods were systematically applied to analyze the intricate interplay between singlet-triplet exchange interaction, doubly-excited configurations, and dynamic correlation effects, explaining the Delta EST <0 values for most compounds observed. These results were not predicted by TD-DFT.

Electron spin resonance resolves intermediate triplet states in delayed fluorescence

Bluebell H. Drummond et al.

Summary: The spin interconversion mechanism plays a crucial role in the efficiency of delayed fluorescence emitters, with the energy gap between local excitation and charge-transfer triplet states affecting the spin exchange process. As this energy separation decreases, the spin interconversion shifts from a direct mechanism to an indirect one involving intermediate states.

Tailored amorphization of graphitic carbon nitride triggers superior photocatalytic C-C coupling towards the synthesis of perfluoroalkyl derivatives

Francesco Longobardo et al.

Summary: In this study, a post-synthetic modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) through amorphization treatment resulted in an increase in photocatalytic activity towards the synthesis of valuable perfluoroalkyl derivatives. The super-amorphous CN (SACN) showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity due to its lower crystallinity and reduced bandgap, making it a potential benchmark structure for heterogeneous organic photocatalysis with good versatility and tolerance towards functional group variations of reagents.
