Photoredox-Catalysis-Enabled Ring-Opening Functionalization of Aryl Cyclopropanes

Zhi-Qiang Li et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method for the synthesis of 1,3-difunctionalized compounds utilizing cyclopropanes. Recently, a strategy for the ring-opening functionalization of aryl cyclopropanes was discovered through visible-light promotion. By activating an aryl radical cation derived from oxidative single-electron transfer, the C-C bond of the cyclopropane weakens and cleaves upon nucleophilic attack with an exogenous nucleophile, providing a benzyl radical that can be easily modified into diverse functionalities.

Aryl radical cation promoted remote dioxygenation of cyclopropane derivatives

Chengkai Pan et al.

Summary: Aryl cyclopropane is a class of cyclopropanes that has not been fully explored in terms of its synthetic potential. In this study, a photoredox-catalyzed remote difunctionalization of aryl cyclopropanes is presented, allowing for the facile construction of structurally diverse 1,3/1,5-dioxygenation products using alcohol or water as nucleophiles. This reaction involves aryl radical cation-induced remote activation via intramolecular electronic interaction spanning a cyclopropane-embedded Ts-conjugated system. The combination of photoredox catalysis with copper(II)-mediated radical elaboration enables a formal radical-polar cross-over manifold, while maintaining mild conditions, wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and high regioselectivities. Preliminary mechanistic experiments suggest a concerted SN2-like ring-opening functionalization.

Iron-Catalyzed Reductive Ring Opening/gem-Difluoroallylation of Cyclopropyl Ketones

Bing Yuan et al.

Summary: By merging C-C and C-F bond cleavage, a regioselective ring opening/gem-difluoroallylation of cyclopropyl ketones with a-trifluoromethylstyrenes was developed, which proceeds under the catalysis of iron with the combination of manganese and TMSCl as the reducing agents. This reaction provides a new entry to the synthesis of carbonyl-containing gem-difluoroalkenes. Remarkably, the ketyl radical-induced selective C-C bond cleavage and the following generation of more-stable carbon-centered radicals enable complete regiocontrol of this ring opening reaction for various substitution patterns of the cyclopropane ring.

Substrate-controlled C-H or C-C alkynylation of cyclopropanes: generation of aryl radical cations by direct light activation of hypervalent iodine reagents

Tin V. T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: In this study, the first oxidative C-H alkynylation of arylcyclopropanes was reported. Visible light irradiation of ethynylbenziodoxolone (EBX) reagents at 440nm promoted the reaction. By selecting the aryl group on the cyclopropane, the outcome of the reaction could be switched from alkynylation of the C-H bond to oxyalkynylation of the C-C bond. Unlike previous works, this reaction proceeded without the need for a catalyst. Computational studies revealed that the presence of two ortho methyl groups on the benzene ring favored the barrierless process of C-H activation.

Kinetic Analysis of a Cysteine-Derived Thiyl-Catalyzed Asymmetric Vinylcyclopropane Cycloaddition Reflects Numerous Attractive Noncovalent Interactions

Amanda K. Turek et al.

Summary: The kinetic studies of a VCP cycloaddition catalyzed by peptide-based thiyl radicals show that the ring-opening of VCP is crucial for both the rate and enantioselectivity. Noncovalent interactions play key roles in disrupting unproductive self-aggregation of both the peptide catalyst and VCP. The presence of a substituent at the 4-position of the proline residue is essential for both turnover/rate and selectivity, explaining the requirement for this key catalyst feature.
