Martin Keilwerth et al.

Summary: Terminal imido complexes of iron have been widely studied in metal-catalyzed nitrogen-transfer chemistry. In this study, a new tris-NHC chelating ligand (TIMMNMes) was used to synthesize and compare two series of iron alkyl imido complexes, including a reactive Fe(V) adamantyl imido intermediate. The stability and reactivity of these complexes were investigated using various characterization techniques and quantum chemical calculations.

Intermolecular Enantioselective Benzylic C(sp3)-H Amination by Cationic Copper Catalysis

Ling Dai et al.

Summary: Intramolecular enantioselective radical C(sp(3))-H functionalization allows for the synthesis of chiral amines, but methods for intermolecular enantioselective C(sp(3))-H amination remain elusive. Here, a cationic copper catalytic system for intermolecular enantioselective benzylic C(sp(3))-H amination with peroxide as an oxidant is reported. This method allows for the transformation of various alkylarenes and amides into chiral amines with high enantioselectivities and has good functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope. Moreover, it can be used to synthesize bioactive molecules, including chiral drugs.

Alkali Metal Ions Dictate the Structure and Reactivity of an Iron(II) Imido Complex

Yafei Gao et al.

Summary: The presence of alkali metal ions can modulate the reactivity and structure of metal ligand multiple bonds. Alkali metal cations coordinate the imido ligand and lengthen the Fe=N bond distance. The basicity of the imido ligands increases according to the size of the alkali metal ion. The coordination of alkali metal ions influences the structure and reactivity of the imido ligand and can direct the reactivity of reaction intermediates.

Iron-Catalyzed Intermolecular Amination of Benzylic C(sp3)-H Bonds

Hillol Khatua et al.

Summary: A catalytic system for intermolecular benzylic C(sp3)-H amination utilizing 1,2,3,4-tetrazole as a nitrene precursor via iron catalysis has been developed. This method enables direct installation of 2-aminopyridine into the benzylic and heterobenzylic position, selectively aminating 2 degrees benzylic C(sp3)-H bond over the 3 degrees and 1 degrees benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds. The experimental studies reveal that the C(sp3)-H amination proceeds via the formation of a benzylic radical intermediate.

Highly Robust Iron Catalyst System for Intramolecular C(sp3)-H Amidation Leading to γ-Lactams

Jeonguk Kweon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of an iron catalyst system for intramolecular C-H amidation to synthesize gamma-lactams from dioxazolone precursors. The reaction, catalyzed by (phthalocyanine)(FeCl)-Cl-III, proceeds through a stepwise radical pathway involving hydrogen atom abstraction and radical rebound, leading to extremely high turnover numbers of up to 47,000 under mild and aerobic conditions. The high turnover numbers and air-compatibility are rationalized based on experimental and computational mechanistic studies.

Enantioselective C-H Amination Catalyzed by Nickel Iminyl Complexes Supported by Anionic Bisoxazoline (BOX) Ligands

Yuyang Dong et al.

Summary: The chiral trityl-substituted bisoxazoline ligand was prepared as an analog to the previously reported nickel dipyrrin system for ring-closing amination catalysis. The ligand-metal complex exhibited enantioselective intramolecular C-H bond amination with decent yield and moderate enantioselectivity. Kinetic and isotopic studies suggested that the enantioselectivity is determined by both H-atom abstraction and radical capture steps in the reaction mechanism.

Approximations of density matrices in N-electron valence state second-order perturbation theory (NEVPT2). I. Revisiting the NEVPT2 construction

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: The study compares the performance of CU, PS, and EPS approximations for the fourth-order density matrices, discussing NEVPT2, contraction schemes, approximations to density matrices, and the intruder state problem. The EPS approximation can reproduce accurate results without any intruder states, while the PS approximation with conservative cutoffs produces stable results. CU approximation may lead to significant computational savings, but often results in intruder states, highlighting the importance of eigenspectra analysis in evaluating the accuracy of density matrix approximations.

Conformational control of bis-urea self-assembled supramolecular pH switchable low-molecular-weight hydrogelators

Adam D. O'Donnell et al.

Summary: The synthesis and structure-property relationships of eight different low molecular weight hydrogelators based on a bisaromatic urea core unit were investigated. These hydrogelators form gels when the pH of the solution is lowered. Gel formation is triggered by the addition of a mineral acid or the ring-opening hydrolysis of glucono-delta-lactone. The low molecular weight hydrogelators were studied using analytical techniques such as NMR spectroscopy and rheology, and their ability to uptake a dye, methylene blue, was determined by UV-vis spectroscopy.
