Highly Selective Transformation of Biomass Derivatives to Valuable Chemicals by Single-Atom Photocatalyst Ni/TiO2

Summary: In this study, a highly selective catalyst composed of nickel single atoms confined to the surface of titanium dioxide was presented for the transformation of glycerol to glycolaldehyde. Driven by light, the catalyst operated under ambient conditions using air as a green oxidant. The optimized catalyst showed a selectivity of over 60% to glycolaldehyde, resulting in a high production rate and turnover number compared to a NiOx nanoparticle-decorated TiO2 photocatalyst.

Summary: A photocatalyst has been developed by anchoring a Ru complex on CdS quantum dots, achieving selective oxidation of HMF to DFF or HMFCA with high conversion (>81%) and selectivity (>90%). This selective conversion can work well using natural sunlight outside the laboratory, and notably achieves selective production of HMFCA through photocatalytic HMF oxidation for the first time. This photocatalyst is also applicable for the selective oxidation of other compounds with hydroxyl and aldehyde groups.

Selective Photoelectrocatalytic Glycerol Oxidation to Dihydroxyacetone via Enhanced Middle Hydroxyl Adsorption over aBi2O3-Incorporated Catalyst

Summary: This study reports a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) glycerol oxidation method for the production of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) with enhanced selectivity. A heterogeneous photoanode consisting of Bi2O3 nanoparticles on TiO2 nanorod arrays was used, and the selectivity of DHA was increased. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed the interaction between the catalyst and glycerol, as well as the parallel pathways of the reaction. Furthermore, a self-powered PEC system was designed, achieving high productivity of DHA and H2.
