Trialkoxysilane Exchange: Scope, Mechanism, Cryptates and pH-Response

Selina Hollstein et al.

Summary: The dynamic covalent chemistry of the Si-O bond has unique opportunities but is rarely used to assemble discrete molecular architectures, possibly due to the harsh conditions required for exchange reactions at silicon in aprotic solvents. In this study, we provide a comprehensive account on the reaction of trialkoxysilanes with alcohols and identify mild conditions for rapid exchange in aprotic solvents. We uncover, understand, and exploit the effects of substituents, solvent, and salt for the construction of sila-orthoester cryptates, which show a sharp, divergent pH-response attractive for future applications beyond host-guest chemistry, such as drug delivery.

Expanding structural diversity in a library of disulfide macrocycles through in-situ imide hydrolysis

Marcin Konopka et al.

Summary: We present an unconventional approach to dynamic covalent chemistry, using in-situ hydrolysis of a bis-imide to control the composition of a library of structurally diverse macrocycles. By utilizing a single building block, a library of disulfide-based architectures can be generated in a one-pot single-step process. Our dual-stimuli method, involving simultaneous changes in pH and DMSO concentration, enhances the structural diversity of the macrocyclic products. Kinetic analysis provides mechanistic insights into this complex process. Our facile strategy enables the synthesis of water-soluble, multicomponent, and dynamic macrocycles with various functional groups, demonstrating potential for guest-driven phase transfer applications.

Dihalo bismuth cations: unusual coordination properties and inverse solvent effects in Lewis acidity

Jacqueline Ramler et al.

Summary: A series of well-defined cationic hepta-coordinate bismuth halides stabilized by substitutionally labile solvent molecules were synthesized and characterized, showing unprecedented symmetry and a lone pair at the central atom for main group compounds. The unexpectedly high Lewis acidities of BiX3 in moderately polar solvents are likely due to the formation of [BiX2(solv)(5)](+) and related ionic species.
