Facile Synthesis of Metallosalphen-Based 2D Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks for NO2 Sensing: Metal Coordination Induced Planarization

Xi Su et al.

Summary: We developed a nonplanar hexahydroxyl-functionalized Salphen ligand (6OH-Salphen) through a facile two-step synthesis and used it to construct layered 2D c-MOFs through in situ one pot synthesis based on the synergistic metal binding effect of the N2O2 pocket of Salphen. The Cu-Salphen-MOF exhibited periodically heterogeneous pore structures due to the C-2v symmetry of the ligand. With higher metal density and shorter in-plane metal-metal distance, Cu-Salphen-MOF showed excellent NO2 sensing performance with good sensitivity, selectivity, and reversibility. This work provides a new approach to directly construct 2D c-MOFs from nonplanar ligands, simplifying the synthesis process and offering new possibilities for preparing functional materials with different topologies.

Two-Dimensional Conjugated Metal-Organic Frameworks with Large Pore Apertures and High Surface Areas for NO2 Selective Chemiresistive Sensing

Pei Chen et al.

Summary: The development of two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) with remarkable electrical properties has created a new platform for efficient energy storage, sensing, and electrocatalysis. However, the availability of suitable ligands is limited, especially for 2D c-MOFs with large pore apertures and high surface areas. In this study, two new 2D c-MOFs (HIOTP-M, M=Ni, Cu) are successfully synthesized using a large conjugated ligand HAOTP. Among the reported 2D c-MOFs, HIOTP-Ni exhibits the largest pore size of 3.3 nm and one of the highest surface areas (up to 1300 m(2) g(-1)). As a demonstration, HIOTP-Ni shows promising chemiresistive sensing properties towards 10 ppm NO2 gas with high selectivity (405%) and a rapid response (1.69 min). This work highlights the significant correlation between the pore aperture of 2D c-MOFs and their sensing performance.

Largely Pseudocapacitive Two-Dimensional Conjugated Metal-Organic Framework Anodes with Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital Localized in Nickel-bis(dithiolene) Linkages

Panpan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel phthalocyanine-based nickel-bis(dithiolene) (NiS4)-linked 2D c-MOF (denoted as Ni2[CuPcS8]) was reported, which exhibited outstanding pseudocapacitive properties in 1 M TEABF4/acetonitrile. The Ni2[CuPcS8] electrode demonstrated a record-high specific capacitance among reported 2D c-MOFs in non-aqueous electrolytes (312 F g-1) and remarkable cycling stability (93.5% after 10,000 cycles). The unique electron-storage capability of Ni2[CuPcS8] was attributed to its localized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) over the nickel-bis(dithiolene) linkage, enabling efficient delocalization of injected electrons without inducing apparent bonding stress. The Ni2[CuPcS8] anode was used in an asymmetric supercapacitor device, delivering a high operating voltage of 2.3 V, a maximum energy density of 57.4 Wh kg-1, and ultralong stability over 5000 cycles.

Redox-Active Mixed-Linker Metal-Organic Frameworks with Switchable Semiconductive Characteristics for Tailorable Chemiresistive Sensing

Xiao-Cheng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a mixed-linker conductive MOF system was developed by incorporating tetrathiafulvalene and Ni-bis(dithiolene) moieties, allowing precise control over electronic structures and semiconductor characteristics by adjusting their molar ratio. The semiconducting behavior of the MOF system can be switched from n-type to p-type by increasing the ratio of tetrathiafulvalene to Ni-bis(dithiolene), resulting in a three orders of magnitude increase in electrical conductivity. Additionally, the mixed-linker MOFs showed synergistic and nonlinear modulation effects on the chemiresistive detection of VOCs, with sensing performance modulated by the linker ratios.

Understanding the Electric Double-Layer Structure, Capacitance, and Charging Dynamics

Jianzhong Wu

Summary: Significant progress has been made in recent years in theoretical modeling of the electric double layer. However, understanding the microscopic details of the electrochemical interface and charging mechanisms under realistic conditions remains a major challenge. This review explores theoretical methods to describe the equilibrium and dynamic responses of the electric double layer structure and capacitance in electrochemical systems, with special emphasis on recent advances in studying nonclassical behavior of the electric double layer.

Room-Temperature Quantitative Quantum Sensing of Lithium Ions with a Radical-Embedded Metal-Organic Framework

Lei Sun et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in quantum sensing have led to transformative detection technologies with high sensitivity, precision, and spatial resolution. In this study, organic radicals integrated in a microporous metal-organic framework (MOF) were used as qubits for quantum sensing of lithium ions in solution at room temperature. The high surface area of the MOF enabled easy accessibility of the lithium ions to the organic qubits, allowing for unambiguous identification and quantitative measurement of their concentration using relaxo-metric and hyperfine spectroscopic methods based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The sensing principle presented in this work can be applied to other metal ions with nonzero nuclear spin.
