Summary: By integrating a monocrystalline silicon solar cell into the circuit of an organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT), the possibility of self-powered and light-modulated operation of OPECT optoelectronics was demonstrated. Different light-addressable configurations were constructed using depletion-mode and accumulation-mode OECTs, and their characteristics were systematically studied and compared. Light-controlled OPECT unipolar inverters were designed with various parameters depending on the incident irradiance, and optimization was done with respect to the power source and resistance. This work combines OPECT optoelectronics with flexible substrates and solar cells for potential applications in portable and wearable devices.

Summary: This study addresses the challenge of achieving maximum transconductance (g(m)) at zero gate bias (V-G) in organic electrochemical transistors. By utilizing unique light-matter interplay in the newly emerged technique of organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT), a dual-ligand photosensitive metal-organic framework (DL-PS-MOFs)/TiO2 nanorods (NRs) gated poly(ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) OPECT is developed, demonstrating enhanced performance with maximum g(m) at zero V-G. The device is further biologically interfaced with a miRNA-triggered growth of DNA spheres for sensitive miRNA-21 detection.

Summary: This study presents a biosensor based on MOF-on-MOF-derived semiconductor heterojunctions, which relies on the bioinduced AgI transition on ZnO@In2O3@AgI. The photocurrent switches from cathodic to anodic due to the generation of ZnO@In2O3@In2S3@Ag2S heterojunctions by bioproduced H2S. The biosensor shows good selectivity and sensitivity for detecting NSE with a low detection limit of 0.58 pg/mL.

Summary: This study developed a polymer dot (Pdot)-gated accumulation-type organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) biosensor for sensitive urea detection. The Pdot/PTAA gating module showed superior performance compared to the de-doped PEDOT:PSS channel, and the urea-dependent status of Pdots was found to be correlated with the device's response. High-performance urea detection was achieved with a wide linear range of 1 μM-50 mM and a low detection limit of 195 nM. This work represents a generic platform for developing advanced accumulation-type OPECT and beyond, taking into account the diversity of the Pdot family and its interactions with other species.

Summary: Organic photodiodes (OPDs) have the potential to be used in flexible, lightweight, and miniaturized photodetectors for wearable applications. However, the current and light responsivity of OPDs are limited, and alternative methods are needed to enhance the signal response. In this study, a miniaturized organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) is integrated with an OPD module to harness the potential of OPDs in acquiring physiological signals. The integrated photodetector (IPD) system uses the light intensity to regulate the OPD voltage output, which in turn modulates the OECT channel current. The high transconductance of the OECT enables efficient voltage-to-current conversion, improving the signal-to-noise ratio at the sensing site. The IPD achieves significantly higher photocurrent and responsivity compared to the standalone OPD, highlighting its potential as a wearable biosensor for detecting weak light-based signals from living systems.

Summary: Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have shown promising performance as transducers and amplifiers of low potentials due to their exceptional transconductance enabled by the volumetric charging of organic mixed ionic/electronic conductors (OMIECs). However, current approaches that directly conduct chemical reactions within the OECT electrolyte do not fully leverage the OECT's large transconductance, resulting in sub-unity transduction of gate to drain current. This study presents an alternative device architecture that separates chemical transduction and amplification processes to achieve high-gain chemical OECT transducers.
