Optimization and automation of rapid and selective analysis of fatty acid methyl esters from aqueous samples by headspace SPME arrow extraction followed by GC-MS/MS analysis

Lucie K. Tintrop et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel and green analytical approach based on headspace solid-phase microextraction arrow and gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was proposed for the determination of 24 fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) in aqueous samples. Thorough optimization and automation of the relevant parameters significantly accelerated the method, while maintaining low detection limits and high selectivity. Evaluation of the method on real samples demonstrated its applicability for water analysis and potential for further applications with solid and gaseous samples containing FAMEs.

Circular bioeconomy solutions: driving anaerobic digestion of waste streams towards production of high value medium chain fatty acids

Ajay Menon et al.

Summary: This review discusses the process and challenges of producing MCFAs from organic wastes, suggesting adapting the AD process to produce more economically viable products and identifying downstream separation and extraction as the main bottleneck. Standardization across studies and implementing various methods at pilot scale levels are critical to developing the viability of the MCFA production process.

Evaluation of gas chromatography for the separation of a broad range of isotopic compounds

Nimisha Thakur et al.

Summary: The separation of deuterated compounds from their protiated counterparts is crucial for drug discovery and development, as well as investigating kinetic isotope effects. Gas-liquid chromatography has successfully achieved separations of various isotopologue pairs using different stationary phases, covering a wide range of polarity and chemical interactions. Different stationary phases exhibit different effects on isotope separation, with nonpolar phases often showing an inverse isotope effect and polar phases showing a normal isotope effect.
