Ferrocene derivatives with planar chirality and their enantioseparation by liquid-phase techniques

Paola Peluso et al.

Summary: In the last decade, planar chiral ferrocenes have gained increasing interest in various fields. However, there has been limited exploration in the enantioseparation science for these metallocenes. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the liquid-phase enantioseparation methods for planar chiral ferrocenes, integrating this topic with relevant aspects of ferrocene chemistry.

The treatment of dispersion terms for solution systems

De-Cai Fang et al.

Summary: DFT calculations of reaction mechanisms in solution, especially for transition-metal-catalyzed reactions, have been extensively studied using the traditional DFT-D3 method. However, the traditional method tends to overestimate dispersion, leading to a low activation free-energy barrier. To address this issue, a proper treatment of dispersion correction for solution systems is proposed, which considers both solute-solute and solvent-solute dispersion. The method has been validated through ligand exchange reactions and catalytic reactions.

Beyond Steric Crowding: Dispersion Energy Donor Effects in Large Hydrocarbon Ligands

Kristian L. Mears et al.

Summary: Interactions between sterically crowded hydrocarbon-substituted ligands involve both repulsive Pauli repulsion and attractive London dispersion interactions. Although the London dispersion interactions play a central role in the formation of condensed matter, they are not as widely recognized as the Pauli repulsion. This is due to the relatively weak individual H⋅⋅⋅H interactions compared to the collective LD energy resulting from numerous H⋅⋅⋅H interactions. The importance of LD attraction energies emerges in certain molecules and can overshadow the Pauli effects.

ON/OFF receptor-like enantioseparation of planar chiral 1,2-ferrocenes on an amylose-based chiral stationary phase: The role played by 2-propanol

Chiara Cantatore et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated an ON/OFF switching of receptor-like chiral discrimination through the use of different alcohols as mobile phases. The differences in retention times between the enantiomers of nine planar chiral 1,2-ferrocenes were significantly influenced by the choice of alcohol.

Separation of planar chiral ferrocenes by capillary electrokinetic chromatography and liquid chromatography

Antoine Morvan et al.

Summary: This study explored the enantiomeric separation of six unsymmetrically disubstituted ferrocene derivatives using capillary electrokinetic chromatography (CEKC) and liquid chromatography (LC). LC with specific mobile phases and polysaccharide-based columns achieved partial separation of the enantiomers. CEKC with a phosphate buffer and cyclodextrins showed high resolution enantioseparation for most of the compounds. Overall, CEKC demonstrated better enantioseparating power than LC.

London Dispersion in Alkane Solvents

Marcel A. Strauss et al.

Summary: The importance of London dispersion interactions in solution is a subject of ongoing debate, with the attenuation degree still not properly understood. Experimental results suggest that intramolecular dispersion is only marginally influenced, while the properties of the solvent significantly impact the half-life.

The molecular bases of chiral recognition in 2-(benzylsulfinyl) benzamide enantioseparation

Paola Peluso et al.

Summary: Liquid-phase chromatography on chiral stationary phase is a popular technique for enantiomer separation, and understanding the molecular mechanisms of enantiodiscrimination is crucial. Computational analysis based on conformation and electrostatic potential can provide insights into the molecular level enantioseparation mechanism. Correlating calculated properties with experimental chromatographic parameters helps profile the structural landscape and differences between competing sites, ultimately providing a rationale for the analytical separation.

London Dispersion Interactions Rather than Steric Hindrance Determine the Enantioselectivity of the Corey-Bakshi-Shibata Reduction

Christian Eschmann et al.

Summary: The well-known Corey-Bakshi-Shibata (CBS) reduction is a powerful method for the asymmetric synthesis of alcohols, with London dispersion (LD) interactions playing a crucial role in determining enantiodiscrimination. By modifying CBS catalysts with dispersion energy donors (DEDs), it was possible to improve catalyst design for challenging CBS reductions.

Summary: The chalcogen bond is a noncovalent interaction based on electrophilic features of electron charge density depletion regions on group VI bound atoms. Recent studies have shown promising applications in catalysis and crystal engineering. Research has focused on the role and potential of selenium atoms in enantioseparation, as well as the impact of substitution on chiral discrimination.

On the question of steric repulsion versus noncovalent attractive interactions in chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed asymmetric reactions

Soumi Tribedi et al.

Summary: The study delves into the origin of selectivity in asymmetric catalysis, revealing that weak noncovalent interactions can sometimes outweigh steric effects in enantiocontrolling transition states. By using the fragment molecular orbital method, the relative contributions of various attractive and repulsive interactions in the total interaction energy in enantiocontrolling transition states can be determined. This quantitative insight on intramolecular interactions may aid in the rational design of asymmetric catalysis.

Dispersion forces in chirality recognition - a density functional and wave function theory study of diols

Xaiza Aniban et al.

Summary: Steric considerations and strongly directed interactions are commonly discussed in chirality recognition, but dispersion forces may also be significant for aggregate formation and chirality recognition in biomolecules. By comparing density functional results with local correlation methods, the impact of dispersion on the energies and structures of chiral aggregates is inferred.
