Peak-fitting of Cu 2p photoemission spectra in Cu0, Cu1+, and Cu2+oxides: A method for discriminating Cu0 from Cu1+

Jorge Alejandro Torres-Ochoa et al.

Summary: The photoemission spectra of Cu 2p were studied for a metallic ultra-thin film and the initial oxidation stages. The validity of the proposed peak-fitting procedures was assessed by analyzing annealed films. Accurate determination of Cu1+ and Cu2+ states and quantification of O 1s species were achieved, resulting in compositions close to stoichiometric values. The relative proportion of Cu1+ to Cu0 states was quantified despite their strong overlap using the proposed peak-fitting analysis.

Practical Strategy for Arsenic(III) Electroanalysis without Modifier in Natural Water: Triggered by Iron Group Ions in Solution

Xin Cai et al.

Summary: A practical strategy for detecting trace-level As(III) in natural water without any modifiers using soluble Fe3+ as a trigger is reported. The method achieves an actual detection limit of 1 ppb and a sensitivity of 0.296 mu A ppb(-1) with excellent stability. The codeposition mechanism of Fe3+ preferentially depositing as Fe-0 is confirmed, which facilitates the adsorption of As(III) and H+ on the electrode surface and the formation of AsH3.

Bimodal interferences of Pb(II) induced by parallel deposition in Pb(II)-Cu (II) electrochemical detections: Voltammetric signals analysis combined with numerical simulations on transient interfacial phenomena

Rui-Ze Xia et al.

Summary: The generation of double peaks in Pb(II)-Cu(II) systems was found to be the parallel deposition of Pb(II) on Cu deposits, which influenced the shape of Pb(II) peaks. The existence of the second peak was controlled through the adjustment of experimental conditions. A kinetic model and simulations based on the model were used to reveal the interference of electroanalysis signals caused by a parallel deposition reaction.

Metal-free cysteamine-functionalized graphene alleviates mutual interferences in heavy metal electrochemical detection

Yang Qiuyue et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollutants are highly toxic and pose great concern in environmental monitoring. Electrochemical detection, hindered by mutual interferences of heavy metal ions, is a main technique with limited sensitivity to Cd2+ ions. This study introduces a metal-free and sustainable nanomaterial, cysteamine covalently functionalized graphene (GSH), which significantly enhances the sensitivity of screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to Cd2+ ions while maintaining sensitivity to other heavy metals. The enhancement is attributed to the grafted thiols on the GSH sheets with strong affinity to Cd2+ ions, based on Pearson's principle. The GSH-modified SPCE also exhibits high reusability and outperforms existing SPCEs modified by non-covalently functionalized graphene derivatives. The GSH-SPCE is successfully validated in tap water.

Arsenic (III) detection with underpotential deposition on gold

Yifei Zhang et al.

Summary: We have developed a new and sensitive stripping voltammetric method for the detection of As(III) in aqueous solution using gold macroelectrode or gold nanoparticle-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The method is based on underpotential deposition (UPD) of As ad-atoms and provides linear responses within the range of 0.01 μM to 0.1 μM or 0.005 μM to 0.1 μM for gold macroelectrodes and gold nanoparticle-modified electrodes, respectively. The method shows practical value with clear and discernable signals even at low concentrations of As(III), meeting the WHO limit for drinking water.
