Microfluidic-based technologies for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of COVID-19: recent advances and future directions

E. Alperay Tarim et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for new technologies in healthcare systems, particularly in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Microfluidic-based technologies, with their advantages of being rapid, low-cost, accurate, and on-site, have shown great potential in the fight against COVID-19. These technologies have been applied in various aspects, including detection of COVID-19 infections, vaccine development and testing, as well as drug discovery and targeted delivery. This review summarizes recent advances in the use of microfluidic platforms in these areas and provides insights into future perspectives and research directions.

Progression of Paper-Based Point-of-Care Testing toward Being an Indispensable Diagnostic Tool in Future Healthcare

Simone Rink et al.

Summary: Point-of-care (POC) diagnostics focus on timely identification of harmful conditions close to patients' needs. While paper-based POC tests, such as lateral flow assays (LFA), have been successful, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed their limitations. This perspective discusses strategies to develop paper-based POC tests that provide higher sensitivity, objective result interpretation, and multiplexing options for integration with machine learning into digital diagnostics and telemedicine.

Molecular detection of SARS-COV-2 in exhaled breath at the point-of-need

Tim Stakenborg et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the need for improved technologies to control the spread of contagious pathogens. This study developed a method to directly quantify viral shedding in exhaled particles for rapid testing. The approach efficiently captured respiratory particles and detected early infections. The breath-based test showed potential in managing airborne respiratory infections.

Encephalitic syndrome and anosmia in COVID-19: Do these clinical presentations really reflect SARS-CoV-2 neurotropism? A theory based on the review of 25 COVID-19 cases

Lydia Pouga

Summary: The pathology of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has shown various neurological manifestations, including encephalitis and anosmia. Evidence suggests possible neuroinvasiveness of the virus, with some cases showing presence within the central nervous system. It can be challenging to differentiate neurological symptoms induced by infection from those caused by the host immune response.

Highly accurate and sensitive diagnostic detection of SARS-CoV-2 by digital PCR

Lianhua Dong et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak caused by a novel Coronavirus has spread globally. Current gold standard RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis shows varying sensitivity, highlighting the need for more accurate methods. A study on RT-dPCR demonstrated significant improvement in detection sensitivity, particularly for asymptomatic patients, making it a highly accurate method for screening suspected cases.
