Antenatal Corticosteroid Exposure is Associated with Childhood Mental Disorders in Late Preterm and Term Infants

Yi-Hsuan Lin et al.

Summary: This population-based cohort study investigated the association between antenatal corticosteroid treatment and childhood mental disorders in infants born at different gestational ages. The study found that exposure to antenatal corticosteroids was associated with a higher risk of developing childhood mental disorders. Administration of corticosteroids in the early stage of pregnancy significantly increased the risk of mental disorders.

Betamethasone for Preterm Birth: Auckland Steroid Trial Full Results and New Insights 50 Years on

Anthony G. B. Walters et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to present the complete results of the first randomized trial of antenatal corticosteroids conducted 50 years ago using modern analysis and reporting methods. The results showed that antenatal betamethasone administered to women at risk of preterm birth between 24 and less than 37 weeks of gestation significantly reduces the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome, with greater efficacy in male infants than female infants. Doubling the dose of betamethasone does not provide additional benefit.

One percent of the clinical dose used for antenatal steroid therapy is sufficient to induce lung maturation when administered directly to the preterm ovine fetus

Erin L. Fee et al.

Summary: Antenatal steroids play an important role in promoting functional maturation of the fetal lung. Current dosing regimens may pose potential risks, but this study found that direct fetal administration of a low dose of betamethasone phosphate can achieve the same lung maturation without maternal steroid administration.

Different corticosteroids and regimens for accelerating fetal lung maturation for babies at risk of preterm birth

Summary: Although there is currently no clear evidence of important differences between dexamethasone and betamethasone, the evidence for several important outcomes for the mother, infant, and child remains inconclusive, and significant benefits or harms cannot be ruled out.

Repeat doses of prenatal corticosteroids for women at risk of preterm birth for improving neonatal health outcomes

Anthony Walters et al.

Summary: The study provides evidence that repeat doses of prenatal corticosteroids for women at risk of preterm birth can reduce the risk of infants experiencing respiratory distress syndrome and other serious health problems, with little to no harm for the women and children in early and mid-childhood.
