Effects of acute cigarette smoke concentrate exposure on mitochondrial energy transfer in fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscle

Stephen T. Decker et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of cigarette smoke on mitochondrial energy transfer in skeletal muscle. The results showed that cigarette smoke directly inhibits oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria, especially at complex I, and impairs the ADP/ATP transport across the mitochondrial membrane, with different effects on fast and slow twitch muscles.

Summary: This study found that sedentary mice exposed to cigarette smoke for 8 months showed preserved mitochondrial respiratory capacity in skeletal muscle, but also increased risk of chronic oxidative stress.

Two Weeks of Smoking Cessation Reverse Cigarette Smoke-Induced Skeletal Muscle Atrophy and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Mice

Tom Tanjeko Ajime et al.

Summary: The study shows that negative effects of smoking on skeletal muscle can be significantly improved within a short period of time, particularly after 2 weeks of smoking cessation. This immediate beneficial impact of cessation on muscle structure and function, especially in the diaphragm, could serve as motivation for smokers to quit smoking early.
