An Eye on Gender Equality: A Review of the Evolving Role and Representation of Women in Ophthalmology

Hannah K. Gill et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been an increase in the representation of women in ophthalmology. However, women still face under-representation in key areas such as leadership positions and ophthalmic surgical subspecialization. They also experience more bias and discrimination compared to men, including a wider gender pay gap. The research identifies domains of leadership, research and academics, income, surgical exposure and subspecialization, harassment, career satisfaction, mentorship, and family and marital differences, and proposes solutions to reduce the reported inequities.
