Diabetic macular ischemia

Beatrice Tombolini et al.

Summary: This review examines a multimodal imaging approach, including optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), for detecting diabetic macular ischemia (DMI). OCTA has emerged as a promising and reliable procedure for qualitatively and quantitatively describing DMI. It can also identify preclinical alterations and predict disease progression before the onset of diabetic retinopathy.

Long-Term Visual Outcomes and Morphologic Biomarkers of Vision Loss in Eyes With Diabetic Macular Edema Treated With Anti-VEGF Therapy

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the morphological characteristics and long-term visual outcomes in eyes with diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, finding that changes in the outer retina and RPE are OCT biomarkers of long-term visual outcomes in eyes with DME treated with anti-VEGF.

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANGIOGRAPHY ASSESSMENT OF THE DIABETIC MACULA A Comparison Study Among Different Algorithms

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of histogram adjustments and binarization thresholding selection on quantitative measurements of diabetic macular ischemia using OCTA. Results showed that binarized images obtained using a global threshold had better quality, while local thresholds tended to generate higher values of measured metrics in quantitative analysis. Differences in OCTA metrics between healthy and DR eyes were significantly affected by binarization threshold selection.

Volume rendered 3D OCTA assessment of macular ischemia in patients with type 1 diabetes and without diabetic retinopathy

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure macular perfusion in patients with type 1 diabetes without signs of diabetic retinopathy using OCTA. Comparing with a control group, diabetic patients showed reduced 3D perfusion density, particularly at the level of the deep vascular complex (DVC).

Summary: The study revealed a positive correlation between parafoveal sensitivity and VD in the SCP in eyes with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Areas of low retinal sensitivity were consistently associated with decreased VD in the SCP and the DCC in DR eyes.

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Diabetes

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: The introduction of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has greatly improved our understanding of ocular vascular alterations in diabetes, particularly in the retinal vessels and choriocapillaris. The recent use of widefield technology and 3-dimensional visualization in OCTA imaging has also been discussed.
