Enhancing Diversity in the Ophthalmology Workforce

Fasika A. Woreta et al.

Summary: Health care teams are most effective when diverse life experiences and perspectives are brought to the effort, especially in addressing complex problems for underserved populations. Diversification of the ophthalmology workforce is critical in reducing disparities in vision health care. However, ophthalmology currently lacks diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, and other aspects. Initiatives to increase diversity in the workforce exist, but more efforts are needed to address unconscious bias and promote inclusiveness.

Recent Trends in Faculty Promotion in US Medical Schools: Implications for Recruitment, Retention, and Diversity and Inclusion

Imam M. Xierali et al.

Summary: This study examines recent trends in faculty promotion in U.S. medical schools, finding that promotion rates vary not only by faculty rank but also by factors such as sex, race/ethnicity, department, tenure status, and degree type. Assistant professors had higher promotion rates than associate professors, and minority faculty and non-tenured faculty had lower promotion rates, indicating a need for further research to understand disparities in faculty promotion.
