Single and cumulative exposure to psychosocial work conditions and mental health among young adults

Samira de Groot et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of single and cumulative exposure to adverse psychosocial work conditions on young adults' mental health. The findings suggest that single exposure to high work demands and high-strain jobs at age 22 significantly contribute to internalizing problems at age 29; the association remains significant even after controlling for early life internalizing problems. However, no associations were found between cumulative exposures and internalizing problems, as well as between single or cumulative exposures to psychosocial work conditions and externalizing problems at age 29.

Summary: This longitudinal study found a significant association between mental health problems from childhood to young adulthood and young adults' work functioning. Update of the fractions of cardiovascular diseases and mental disorders attributable to psychosocial work factors in Europe

Isabelle Niedhammer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of psychosocial work exposures on cardiovascular diseases and mental disorders in 35 countries in Europe in 2015. Results showed significant associations between job strain and depression, as well as a stronger impact of long working hours on cardiovascular diseases among men. Overall, preventive policies targeting these modifiable exposures could help reduce the burden of disease in the workplace.

Summary: The study evaluates how employment conditions and psychosocial workplace exposures impact the mental health of young workers. While low-quality studies show risk of bias, some research suggests that sexual harassment and poor job quality are closely related to the mental health outcomes of young workers.

Educational and Employment Outcomes among Young Australians with a History of Depressive Symptoms: A Prospective Cohort Study

Summary: This study found that depressive symptoms reported during adolescence are associated with subsequent educational and employment outcomes, potentially leading to lower completion of education and decreased employment opportunities. For individuals reporting high depressive symptoms during adolescence, considerations of psychosocial job stressors should be taken into account in job design and selection.
