Prevalence of Alzheimer's disease dementia in the 50 US states and 3142 counties: A population estimate using the 2020 bridged-race postcensal from the National Center for Health Statistics

Klodian Dhana et al.

Summary: This study estimates the prevalence and number of people living with Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia in the US. The results show higher prevalence in the east and southeastern regions, with Maryland, New York, and Mississippi having the highest rates. California, Florida, and Texas have the highest number of AD patients. The state- and county-specific estimates can help develop region-specific strategies for care.

2023 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures

[Anonymous]

Summary: This article discusses the impact of Alzheimer's disease on public health, including its prevalence and incidence, mortality and morbidity, care usage and costs, and the effects on family caregivers, the dementia workforce, and society. It highlights the patient journey and potential treatment options for Alzheimer's disease. Currently, there are 6.7 million older Americans living with Alzheimer's dementia, a number that could increase to 13.8 million by 2060 without medical breakthroughs. Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the US, with deaths increasing by over 145% between 2000 and 2019. There is a decline in the number of caregivers and an increase in care provided by each remaining caregiver. The costs of unpaid caregiving in 2022 reached $339.5 billion, impacting caregivers' mental and physical health. Additionally, there is a shortage of healthcare workers in dementia care, and Medicare and Medicaid payments are significantly higher for individuals with dementia. The article also explores the need for sufficient physician specialists in Alzheimer's care, considering the availability of drugs that change the underlying biology of the disease.

Themes describing social isolation in family caregivers of people living with dementia: A scoping review

Joonyup Lee et al.

Summary: Caregiving for people living with dementia is associated with social isolation in family caregivers, which is influenced by disease progression, psychological states, and lack of social supports. However, social supports, social networks, and technology can help reduce social isolation among family caregivers. Identifying themes provides insights for policy and practice implications, such as utilizing technology to enhance social networks.

Experiences of older immigrants living with dementia and their carers: a systematic review and meta-synthesis

Pelden Chejor et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic review and meta-synthesis of the experiences of older immigrants living with dementia and their carers. The results reveal that older immigrants living with dementia and their families face multiple challenges in terms of caregiving. However, there appears to be little difference in experiences between those who have migrated to a new country and those who were born and aged in the same country, but there are differences in their ability to access available services.

How do factors of sociodemographic, health literacy and dementia experience influence carers' knowledge of dementia?

Sophie Crawley et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore how sociodemographic factors, health literacy, and previous experiences of dementia influence family carers' knowledge about dementia. The results showed that greater health literacy and more years of education were associated with greater dementia knowledge. Although there was a slight trend between attending support groups and lower knowledge, there were notable gaps in knowledge, with only a minority accurately identifying dementia as life shortening.

Jun Chu et al.

Summary: The study found that having a spouse with ADRD is associated with higher healthcare expenditures in older adults, mainly due to the higher rate of comorbidities, functional limitations, and older age in this group. Therefore, the importance of tailoring preventative healthcare and social services to meet the needs of this group has been emphasized.

Caregiving intensity and caregiver burden among caregivers of people with dementia: The moderating roles of social support

Ling Xu et al.

Summary: Using the Pearlin stress process model, this study examined the association between caregiving intensity and caregiver burden, finding a nonlinear relationship where burden levels were highest at 14 hours of caregiving per day. Received support, satisfaction with support, and social network were identified as significant buffers for the relationship between caregiving hours and caregiver burden.
