IgE cross-linking induces activation of human and mouse mast cell progenitors

Erika Mendez-Enriquez et al.

Summary: It has been found that mast cell progenitors can be activated by IgE cross-linking, which may contribute to the development of acute allergic airway inflammation.

Birch pollen, air pollution and their interactive effects on airway symptoms and peak expiratory flow in allergic asthma during pollen season - a panel study in Northern and Southern Sweden

Hanne Krage Carlsen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of air pollution and birch pollen exposure on respiratory symptoms in subjects with asthma and allergy to birch. The findings showed that pollen and air pollutants interacted to increase the effect of air pollution on respiratory symptoms in allergic asthma. Based on these results, recommendations for individuals with allergic asthma could be improved to minimize associated morbidities.

Mast cell-derived serotonin enhances methacholine-induced airway hyperresponsiveness in house dust mite-induced experimental asthma

Erika Mendez-Enriquez et al.

Summary: This study found that mast cells release serotonin, which enhances bronchoconstriction and AHR. Mast cells play a key role in the pathogenesis of asthma, and M3-directed treatments may also act by targeting mast cells.

Sex and gender in asthma

Nowrin U. Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with significant differences in prevalence and severity between males and females. Factors such as sex hormones, genetics, and environmental factors play important roles in the differences observed in asthma incidence and severity. Fluctuations in sex hormone levels, gene expression, epigenetic modifications, and responses to environmental factors all contribute to the varying manifestations of asthma between genders.
