An analysis of organism lifelines in an industrial bioreactor using Lattice-Boltzmann CFD

Cees Haringa

Summary: This study explores the use of Euler-Lagrange CFD simulations and Lattice-Boltzmann large-eddy simulations (LB-LES) to analyze environmental gradients and the performance of the biotic phase in bioreactors. By verifying the hydrodynamic characteristics of the simulations, the results indicate that the LB-LES method can accurately simulate dynamic flowfields with significantly reduced computation times.

Evaluation and application of efficient CFD-based methods for the multi-objective optimization of stirred tanks

Mei Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates three numerical methods for determining the mixing time in stirred tanks using CFD. The results show that the MAT method accurately characterizes the mixing process and requires minimal computational resources. Furthermore, through a multi-objective optimization study, the optimal impeller design is obtained.

Using thrust to control the mixing process in stirred tanks with side-entering agitators and viscoelastic fluids

M. Kolano et al.

Summary: In this study, stirring experiments were conducted in a pilot scale tank to investigate the mixing behavior of biogas fermenters using side-entering axial impellers. The analysis revealed three general propeller flow types resulting from the interplay of elastic and inertial forces. A new correlation between axial flow rate and thrust was derived, enabling the prediction of mixing times with good accuracy independently of propeller geometry and mostly rheology below a critical elasticity number.

Validation of Novel Lattice Boltzmann Large Eddy Simulations (LB LES) for Equipment Characterization in Biopharma

Summary: Detailed process and equipment knowledge is crucial for successful production of biopharmaceuticals. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an important tool for equipment characterization. While steady RANS k - epsilon approach can be used for fast power number determination, more investigation is needed for transient schemes to gain detailed flow pattern insights.
