Spanwise-Inclined Jets in Supersonic Crossflow: Effects of Injection Pressure and Separation-Control Effectiveness

Robin Sebastian et al.

Summary: Motivated by the performance of AJVGs in controlling flow separation, this study examines the effects of injection parameters on the physical mechanisms and control effectiveness. Implicit large-eddy simulations show that injection pressure strengthens the jet and jet/crossflow interactions, enhancing the flow topology and the induced CVP. However, there is a critical point where the enhancements stagnate due to flow blockage and momentum influx. The control effectiveness is influenced by interactions between jet-induced shocks and vortical structures, indicating a strong link between jet spacing and injection pressure.

Effects of Jet-to-Jet Spacing of Air-Jet Vortex Generators in Shock-Induced Flow-Separation Control

Deepak Prem Ramaswamy et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to study the influence of spanwise spacing between adjacent orifices of an air-jet vortex-generator (AJVG) array on their separation-control effectiveness. The results showed that the array with intermediate spacing achieved the best control effect, significantly reducing the length and area of separation. The array with the smallest spacing caused adverse vortex interactions and increased separation, while the array with the largest spacing only made local modifications in the separation region.

Flow fields around spanwise-inclined elliptical jets in supersonic crossflow

Robin Sebastian et al.

Summary: This study performs implicit large-eddy simulations to analyze the flow physics of spanwise-inclined elliptical jets in supersonic crossflow and investigates the influence of aspect ratio. The study reveals that elliptical jet orifices are more effective than circular orifices for separation control, and the flow features vary with aspect ratio.

Influence of jet spacing in spanwise-inclined jet injection in supersonic crossflow

R. Sebastian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of jet spacing on the control effectiveness of air-jet vortex generators in supersonic flow. Using large-eddy simulations and experimental visualizations, the study analyzes the effects of different jet spacings on flow structures, vortical structures, and boundary-layer statistics. The insights gained from this study are crucial for the development of efficient control setups.

Control of Shock-Induced Separation of a Turbulent Boundary Layer Using Air-Jet Vortex Generators

Deepak Prem Ramaswamy et al.

Summary: Experimental analysis showed that adequate interaction between steady air-jet vortex generators is essential for effective control of shock-induced boundary-layer separation, with the most favorable control effect achieved at a jet spacing of 0.76 delta. The injection of jets resulted in strong corrugation of the separation zone, reducing its area and turbulent intensity. The increase in turbulent mixing confirmed the control effect between jet injection and separation shock, while flow farther away from the surface remained unaffected, reducing potential drag penalties.
