Experimental Aeroelastic Benchmark of a Very Flexible Wing

Or Avin et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design, analyses, and testing of the Pazy wing, a highly flexible wing model used for studying aeroelastic phenomena and validating nonlinear aeroelastic simulation models. Static loading and ground vibration tests were conducted to assess the wing's stiffness and determine the impact of the polyester skin. Wind-tunnel tests were performed to observe the wing's deformation and strain distribution under different conditions.

Flutter Tests of the Pazy Wing

Ariel Drachinsky et al.

Summary: The paper presents the flutter and limit-cycle oscillation (LCO) tests of the Pazy wing, a very flexible wing model designed to study aeroelastic phenomena associated with nonlinear geometry and provide data for nonlinear aeroelastic model validation. The wing encountered LCO when the wingtip deformation was approximately 25% of the span. The paper first focuses on the onset of the oscillations, and then continues to investigate the LCO characteristics and the nonlinear behavior of the wing.

Flutter Predictions for Very Flexible Wing Wind Tunnel Test

Norberto Goizueta et al.

Summary: This paper seeks to identify the stability boundaries of a highly flexible wing in order to inform a wind-tunnel flutter test campaign. The objective is twofold: to identify relevant physical processes via simulation and ensure safe experiments, and to provide a benchmark case with freely available computational models and test data. Two geometrically nonlinear structural models coupled with potential flow aerodynamics are independently used for analysis, successfully reproducing the experimental results of a prototype wing. The study reveals strong geometrically nonlinear effects in the wing, resulting in substantial changes to its structural dynamics. The stability characteristics of the wing depend on freestream velocity and angle of attack.

An integrated measurement approach for the determination of the aerodynamic loads and structural motion for unsteady airfoils

C. Mertens et al.

Summary: An experimental method is used to determine the structural motion and unsteady aerodynamic loads of a pitching airfoil model, utilizing a single measurement and data processing system, which simplifies the process compared to using multiple systems simultaneously. Flow field measurements are conducted using a robotic PIV system and Lagrangian particle tracking with helium-filled soap bubbles, while structural measurements are achieved through fiducial marker tracking on the model surface. The determination of unsteady aerodynamic loads is based on two approaches using potential flow and thin airfoil theory, resulting in efficient load determination on unsteady airfoils with good agreement to reference measurements.

Nonlinear Aeroelastic Simulations and Stability Analysis of the Pazy Wing Aeroelastic Benchmark

Jonathan Hilger et al.

Summary: The Pazy wing aeroelastic benchmark is a highly flexible wind tunnel model. Static coupling simulations and stability analyses for selected flow velocities and angles of attack were presented, showing a significant change in flutter stability with increasing deflection and influence of modal properties.
