Impacts of organic materials amendment on the soil antibiotic resistome in subtropical paddy fields

Zongming Li et al.

Summary: The effects and mechanisms of different organic materials on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in paddy soils are not well studied. This field experiment compared the effects of conventional chemical fertilization and organic material amendments (rice straw, swine manure, and biochar) on ARGs. The results showed that different organic materials had varying effects on ARGs profile and abundance, with swine manure significantly increasing the detected number and relative abundance of ARGs.

Nationwide estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus losses via runoff from rice paddies using data-constrained model simulations

Jin Fu et al.

Summary: The study re-evaluated the runoff losses of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from rice paddies in China using a newly-developed model, showing that the national N and P losses were lower than previous estimates but higher than NPCP data. Hotspots were identified in south China, with most losses occurring during non-fertilization period and in single rice system.

Estimation of nitrogen runoff loss from croplands in the Yangtze River Basin: A meta-analysis

Yufu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantified nitrogen runoff loss rates from croplands in the Yangtze River Basin and identified key factors regulating these losses. Results showed that runoff loss rates increased from upstream to downstream regions, with factors such as runoff depth, soil N content, and fertilizer addition rate playing important roles in regulating nitrogen runoff loss. Models were effective in predicting nitrogen runoff loss rates and loads, with focus areas identified for reducing these losses.

Ecological impacts of freshwater algal blooms on water quality, plankton biodiversity, structure, and ecosystem functioning

Cihelio Alves Amorim et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms, particularly those dominated by Cyanobacteria, have significant negative impacts on freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, affecting water quality, plankton structure, and resource use efficiency of phytoplankton and zooplankton. The loss of biodiversity due to algal blooms results in decreased ecosystem functioning, with cascading effects on plankton dynamics.

Decoupling between ammonia emission and crop production in China due to policy interventions

Wulahati Adalibieke et al.

Summary: By quantifying changes in cropland ammonia emissions in China from 1980 to 2050, this study reveals that agricultural policies have had a significant impact on these emissions. Optimizing fertilizer management and food consumption could help mitigate ammonia emissions while maintaining crop yields.

Coupling Bayesian-Monte Carlo simulations with substance flow analysis for efficient pollutant management: A case study of phosphorus flows in China

Jing-Cheng Han et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for plants and healthy rivers, but an overload can degrade water quality. Substance flow analysis helps manage phosphorus flow, but has limitations in data uncertainty. The proposed BMC-SFA technique integrates Bayesian networks and Monte Carlo simulations to improve understanding of nutrient flows in surface waters, providing valuable insights for phosphorus management.
