The summer 2022 drought: a taste of future climate for the Po valley (Italy)?

Davide Bonaldo et al.

Summary: The severe drought in Europe in Spring and Summer 2022 had a significant impact on the Po valley in northern Italy, causing a water scarcity crisis and saltwater intrusion in coastal regions. Through the analysis of discharge records, precipitation data, and climate models, this study projected future rainfall regimes and demonstrated that although events like the 2022 drought may not become typical, their frequency could increase under severe climate change conditions. Rising temperatures and sea levels will further amplify the impacts, affecting agricultural lands and transitional ecosystems. This research highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary, basin-scale approach to climate change adaptation.

Agricultural practices regulate the seasonality of groundwater-river nitrogen exchanges

Monica Pinardi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the seasonal soil nitrogen budgets and dissolved inorganic nitrogen net export in the Mincio River sub-basin in Italy. The results showed seasonal differences in soil nitrogen budgets and no correlation between seasonal inorganic nitrogen loads transported by the river and soil nitrogen budgets.

Short-Term Effects of the EU Nitrate Directive Reintroduction: Reduced N Loads to River from an Alluvial Aquifer in Northern Italy

Edoardo Severini et al.

Summary: The Po Plain in northern Italy is a large aquifer with a significant percentage of its agricultural land classified as a nitrate vulnerable zone. Intensive agriculture and livestock farming in this area have led to elevated nitrate concentrations in the groundwater and surface water. The study examines the impact of manure fertilization and flooding irrigation on the water chemistry of the Mincio River, a tributary of the Po River, and highlights the effectiveness of fertilizer limits in reducing nitrate loads.

Groundwater-dependent ecosystems as transfer vectors of nitrogen from the aquifer to surface waters in agricultural basins: The fontanili of the Po Plain (Italy)

R. Balestrini et al.

Summary: The study found significant spatial variability in fontanili springs in the River Po valley, with nitrogen loads mainly exported in the summer. Random Forest analysis identified key environmental variables influencing nitrate contamination in the springs.

The influence of anthropogenic climate change on wet and dry summers in Europe

Nikolaos Christidis et al.

Summary: This study used attribution research methods to investigate the impact of human influence on historical trends in wet and dry summers in Europe. Future projections suggest an increase in extreme events and dryer conditions, particularly in the southern regions of Europe.

How EU policies could reduce nutrient pollution in European inland and coastal waters

B. Grizzetti et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the current pressures of nitrogen and phosphorus emissions to European fresh and coastal waters from 2005 to 2012, as well as the effects of three policy scenarios of nutrient reduction. Results showed that policy measures supporting technological improvements could decrease nutrient export to the seas, improving the ecological status of rivers and lakes but potentially worsening the nutrient imbalance in coastal ecosystems and eutrophication.

Estimating Regionalized Hydrological Impacts of Climate Change Over Europe by Performance-Based Weighting of CORDEX Projections

Frederiek C. Sperna Weiland et al.

Summary: Ensemble projections of future changes in discharge over Europe show large variation, with different weighting approaches influencing the consistency of the projections. Weighting methods favored projections from the same General Circulation Models, but high weights obtained through past good performance can provide deviating projections for the future. In Central Europe, differences between models become more pronounced, highlighting the need for robust weighting methods to increase the reliability of change signals.
