Drivers of the irrigation water rebound effect: A case study of Hetao irrigation district in Yellow River basin, China

Hang Xu et al.

Summary: Improving irrigation systems to enhance efficiency is often seen as an effective way to reduce water extraction, but it doesn't always lead to a decrease in overall water extraction. This study identifies four drivers of the irrigation water rebound effect (WRE) and provides a case study to illustrate the main drivers of unrealized water savings. The study highlights the importance of understanding the locations where water extraction continues to increase despite improvements in irrigation efficiency.

Implementing a combined Delphi and Focus Group qualitative methodology in Nexus research designs-The case of the WEFE Nexus in Apokoronas, Crete

Carolin Canessa et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on understanding the complex relationships between Water, Energy, Food, and Ecosystems (WEFE). The Nexus approach, which captures these interdependencies, has been used to identify opportunities for sustainable resource use. However, there is a need to harmonize the technical and managerial dimensions of WEFE with the perspectives and priorities of local populations. This paper presents a methodological framework that integrates the perspectives of experts, practitioners, and local stakeholders through the Delphi and Focus Group methods.

Perceived drivers and barriers in the governance of wastewater treatment and reuse in India: Insights from a two-round Delphi study

Lena Breitenmoser et al.

Summary: Despite the known benefits, wastewater treatment and reuse practices are limited in India. Key drivers include persistent water scarcity, while barriers include lack of enforcement of pollution control, lack of integrated water resources management directive, and insufficient collaboration between governmental organizations. Only a few states have adopted effective governance structures. New effluent discharge standards, government support programs, and increasing water scarcity are expected to drive innovative wastewater treatment and reuse practices.

Agricultural water saving through technologies: a zombie idea

C. Dionisio Perez-Blanco et al.

Summary: A zombie idea, such as the belief that modern irrigation systems automatically save water, persists despite being proven wrong by scientific evidence. This paper investigates how this misconception forms, why it continues to exist, and how to overcome it.
