Environment-sensitivity functions for gross primary productivity in light use efficiency models

Shanning Bao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the sensitivity of photosynthesis to environmental changes and develops modeling methods to understand the response of GPP, utilizing collected data on GPP sensitivity functions to various environmental factors. Results show significant sensitivity of GPP to environmental factors, highlighting the limitations of current models in capturing interannual variability. The best model demonstrates relatively high efficiency on daily and weekly scales but lower efficiency on an annual scale, providing a basis for more robust global GPP estimates.

Narrow but robust advantages in two-big-leaf light use efficiency models over big-leaf light use efficiency models at ecosystem level

Shanning Bao et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare big-leaf light use efficiency (LUE) models and two-big-leaf LUE models in describing gross primary productivity (GPP) responses in sunlit and shaded leaves. The study also explores different approaches to partition canopies into sunlit and shaded leaves using leaf area index (LAI), clumping index (omega) and leaf angle distribution. The results show that both big-leaf and two-big-leaf LUE models perform similarly in most sites, but the two-big-leaf models are better at describing the daily dynamics of GPP under hot and dry conditions. Additionally, using normalized difference vegetation index with a spherical or flexible leaf angle distribution is a better approach for representing effective LAI.

Estimating Global Gross Primary Production from Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Data and Auxiliary Information Using Machine Learning Methods

Yu Bai et al.

Summary: Global estimates of monthly gross primary production (GPP) from 2001 to 2017 were calculated using the global OCO-2-based SIF product (GOSIF) and auxiliary data. A machine learning model was used to integrate and calibrate satellite GPP products, resulting in highly accurate GPP estimates with validated spatial and seasonal variations on a global scale.

Representativeness of Eddy-Covariance flux footprints for areas surrounding AmeriFlux sites

Housen Chu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the matching between flux footprints and target areas to address a major challenge in model-data integration. The researchers found that mismatches could introduce biases and advocate for footprint-awareness when using flux datasets. They propose a representativeness index based on evaluations to guide specific applications and data use.

Summary: This study found that combining optical SWIR and microwave SM has the potential to improve the accuracy of ET estimation in agricultural landscapes using the PT-JPL model. Different Earth observation-based alternatives can improve the explanatory variances of ET on different types of land.
