Trends and drivers of recent summer drying in Switzerland

S. C. Scherrer et al.

Summary: The Alpine region has been experiencing increasingly dry summers, which have had significant negative impacts on the economy, society, and ecology. This study analyzes drought indicators, evapotranspiration, and meteorological data to assess the trends and drivers of summer drought in Switzerland from 1981 to 2020. The results suggest that both increasing evapotranspiration and a non-significant decrease in precipitation are important drivers of summer drought in the region.

Carbon dioxide fluxes of a mountain grassland: Drivers, anomalies and annual budgets

Julian Rogger et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a 15-year time series of carbon dioxide (CO2) flux measurements on a grassland in Switzerland to assess the effects of agricultural management, climate warming, and anomalous weather conditions on carbon sequestration potential. The results showed that light and temperature were the main drivers of CO2 fluxes, and management methods had a significant impact on photosynthesis but not on ecosystem respiration. Under future climatic conditions, the carbon sequestration potential will depend on the interactions between climate and management as well as the increase in ecosystem respiration.

Permanent grasslands in Europe: Land use change and intensification decrease their multifunctionality

Rene L. M. Schils et al.

Summary: Permanent grasslands in Europe are crucial for providing various ecosystem services, but their area has been declining over time. This review found that land use change and increased management intensity have negative impacts on the multifunctionality of grasslands. Preserving permanent grasslands and adopting low-intensity management practices are important for preserving ecosystem services.

Biases in open-path carbon dioxide flux measurements: Roles of instrument surface heat exchange and analyzer temperature sensitivity

M. Julian Deventer et al.

Summary: Eddy covariance measurements of ecosystem-atmosphere CO2 exchange are crucial for assessing the terrestrial carbon cycle. This study quantifies the impact of open-path sensor biases on carbon and radiative budgets in a sub-boreal wetland. Possible bias sources such as sensor-path heat exchange and temperature sensitivity were examined, with proposed corrections showing either under-correction or over-correction. New correction methods are needed to address these limitations and improve measurement accuracy.

Are there memory effects on greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O and CH4) following grassland restoration?

Lutz Merbold et al.

Summary: A 5-year greenhouse gas exchange study of a intensively managed permanent grassland in Switzerland compared pre- and post-plowing GHG exchange, finding no memory effects on N2O and CH4 emissions but a considerable increase in CO2 uptake. The grassland acted as a carbon sink under usual management.
