Informal care in Huntington's disease: Assessment of objective-subjective burden and its associated risk and protective factors

Eleonore Bayen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the burden of informal caregivers (ICs) and identify associated factors. The study found that family burden was closely related to the functional loss and cognitive-behavioral disorders of HD patients. Additionally, the duration of HD and the presence of aggressive symptoms in patients were associated with the subjective burden of caregivers. However, factors such as financial stability, social network, and employment status can alleviate the burden.

Trine Holt Clemmensen et al.

Summary: The study identified four main categories of carers' support needs, which include daily life when caring for a person with dementia, focus on themselves, maintain own well-being, and communicate and interact with surroundings. Carers tend to prioritize the needs of the person with dementia and may not fully recognize their own needs, highlighting the importance of developing an instrument to facilitate communication and assessment of carers' support needs.
