Compression-after-impact effect on postbuckling behavior of thermoplastic composite laminated plates

Taoye Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the postbuckling behavior of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite laminated plates under uni-axial compression-after-impact and proposes a physical model that considers both internal damage and local geometric imperfection caused by impact. Experimental data is compared with finite element numerical results to validate the method. The numerical results show that initial geometric imperfection, impact point position, plate width-to-thickness ratio, and boundary conditions significantly influence the postbuckling load-deflection curves of the laminated plates under CAI.

Comparison of impact resistance of carbon fibre composites with multiple ultra-thin CNT, aramid pulp, PBO and graphene interlayers

Yunsen Hu et al.

Summary: This study compared the impact properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with different fillers. The results showed that ultra-thin multi-wall carbon nanotubes, Aramid pulp micro/nano-fibers, and poly (pphenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) fibers significantly reduced impact damage, while multi-layer graphene did not have this effect. Furthermore, these ultra-thin interlayers had no adverse effect on compressive properties and even improved the residual compressive strength without any impact damage.

Improving the delamination resistance and impact damage tolerance of carbon fibre-epoxy composites using multi-scale fibre toughening

Anil R. Ravindran et al.

Summary: This study investigates the multi-scale toughening mechanisms for enhancing the fracture toughness, impact damage resistance, and compression-after-impact strength of carbon fiber-epoxy composite laminates by using carbon nano- and micro-fillers. It was found that a synergistic increase in mode II toughness was achieved when carbon nanofibers were combined with short carbon fibers, leading to improvements in impact damage resistance and CAI strength. The key toughening mechanisms provided by the fillers were identified through analyses and scanning electron microscopy.

In-plane compression response of woven CFRP composite after low-velocity impact: Modelling and experiment

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: A finite element model was developed to predict the low-velocity impact and compression-after-impact behavior of woven carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Experimental results validated the accuracy of the model, and detailed microscopic damage analysis was conducted on the composites. The effects of impactor diameter and impact energy on impact damage and CAI behaviors were discussed based on the model.

Cryogenic mechanical properties of graphene oxide/epoxy nanocomposites: Influence of graphene oxide with different oxidation degrees

Jie Fan et al.

Summary: The study showed that as the oxidation degree of graphene oxide increased, it exhibited better dispersion in the matrix and improved interfacial interactions with epoxy resin, leading to enhanced mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. The tensile properties of the GO/epoxy nanocomposites at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature increased with the GO oxidation degree, reaching the highest performance at an appropriate oxidation degree. The toughening mechanisms of GO for epoxy nanocomposites at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature were analyzed and showed significant differences.

Effect of different lateral dimension graphene oxide sheets on the interface of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites

Baowei Qiu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that graphene oxide (GO) sheets with smaller lateral dimensions are more advantageous in enhancing the interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). This is attributed to the presence of a larger number of functional groups and higher roughness on the surface of CFs modified by smaller GO sheets, leading to higher surface energy which enhances chemical bonding and mechanical interlocking at the matrix-fiber interface.
