Radical-mediated thiol-ene 'click' reactions in deep eutectic solvents for bioconjugation

Mark D. Nolan et al.

Summary: In this study, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were applied for the first time in radical-mediated hydrothiolation reactions. The thiol-ene reaction was successfully conducted for amino acid and peptide ligation in DESs under UV and atmospheric-oxygen mediated conditions. This method offers a highly efficient and environmentally friendly approach, allowing complete recycling of the reaction medium. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the potential applications in inhibiting COVID-19 infectivity through fluorescent labelling and glycosylation of an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 mimetic.

Recent Advances in Visible-Light-Mediated Amide Synthesis

Bin Lu et al.

Summary: Visible-light photoredox catalysis has gained significant attention in the synthetic community due to its potential for sustainable and efficient activation of organic molecules. Amide synthesis through photoredox catalysis has become increasingly popular as it allows for the preparation of a wide variety of amides from halides, arenes, and alkanes using visible light irradiation. These methods offer an alternative to traditional amide synthesis strategies involving stoichiometric activating agents.

Deep Eutectic Solvents as a-la-Carte Medium for Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Organic Processes

Xavier Marset et al.

Summary: This review highlights the use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) as sustainable alternatives to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the chemical industry. DESs offer more benign physical and chemical properties compared to VOCs, and many DESs are derived from renewable sources. The use of DESs presents challenges in catalyst compatibility and activity, but designed catalysts and DES systems have been developed to overcome these issues and achieve recyclability. Examples of efficient metal-catalyzed organic transformations using DESs are presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of the catalyst/DES system compared to transformations in VOCs.

Sustainable Synthesis of Amides from Carboxylic Acids and Equivalent Amounts of Amines Using a Reusable Bronsted Acidic Ionic Liquid as a Catalyst and a Solvent

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a simple and easily prepared Bronsted acidic ionic liquid (BAIL) that can act as both solvent and catalyst, and can be recovered and reused multiple times without significant loss of catalytic activity. The BAIL efficiently catalyzed the direct amidation of carboxylic acids and amines, with a broad substrate scope and significant sustainability.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Benworth B. Hansen et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.

Basics and properties of deep eutectic solvents: a review

Tracy El Achkar et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents, emerging in green chemistry only seventeen years ago, have led to a plethora of publications covering various research areas and diverse fields of application. They are seen as promising alternatives to conventional organic solvents due to their straightforward preparation using highly accessible and natural compounds, as well as high tunability in properties. The physicochemical properties of these solvents, such as phase behavior, density, viscosity, ionic conductivity, surface tension, and polarity, can be controlled by factors like the choice of forming compounds, molar ratio, temperature, and water content.
