Photoredox Promoted Barbier-Type Reaction of Alkyl Iodides with N-Alkyl and N-Aryl Imines

Anton A. Gladkov et al.

Summary: The reaction between organozinc reagents and unactivated imines is enhanced under blue light irradiation in the presence of a photocatalyst. The coordination between Lewis acidic zinc iodide and the imine plays a crucial role in improving reaction efficiency. This method can be carried out using alkyl iodides under Barbier conditions.

N-tosylhydrazones as acceptors for nucleophilic alkyl radicals in photoredox catalysis: A short case study on possible side reactions

Anna G. Kinsella et al.

Summary: We attempted the development of a photoredox-catalyzed alpha-C-H alkylation reaction using N-tosylhydrazones as radical alkylating partners. However, the low reactivity of N-tosylhydrazones towards nucleophilic radicals and unexpected side reactions posed challenges, leading to unsuccessful results.

Accessing Illusive E Isomers of α-Ester Hydrazones via Visible-Light-Induced Pd-Catalyzed Heck-Type Alkylation

Nikita Kvasovs et al.

Summary: A visible-light-induced Pd-catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of alkylated ester hydrazones has been developed. This method involves the generation of a nucleophilic carbon-centered radical from alkyl bromide, iodide, or redox-active ester, which is then added to hydrazone and desaturated by palladium. The majority of the products obtained possess E configuration, which is not achievable by conventional condensation methods. Additionally, a sequential C,N-alkylation protocol has been established to produce tetrahydropyridazines through the reaction between 1,3-dihalides and glyoxylate-derived hydrazone.

Visible-Light-Driven Enantioselective Radical Addition to Imines Enabled by the Excitation of a Chiral Phosphoric Acid-Imine Complex

Tatsuhiro Uchikura et al.

Summary: A visible-light-driven enantioselective radical addition to imines was developed by directly exciting a chiral phosphoric acid-imine complex. Chiral amine products were obtained with high enantioselectivities using benzothiazolines as the radical precursors (up to 98% ee). Mechanistic studies revealed the photoredox activities of the chiral phosphoric acid-imine complex in oxidizing benzothiazolines.

Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalyst-Free Radical Trifluoromethylation

Yufei Li et al.

Summary: An attractive, versatile, and operationally simple visible-light-induced trifluoromethylation method has been demonstrated, which is transition-metal-free, photocatalyst-free, and oxidant-free. Inexpensive and readily available triflic anhydride (Tf2O) was chosen as the radical trifluoromethyl source, and thianthrene was used as a recyclable Tf2O-activating reagent, achieving a high-yielding and scalable trifluoromethylation reaction. Density functional theory and mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction involves a free radical homolytic process excited by visible light, generating a key trifluoromethyl radical intermediate.

Photoredox Fluoroalkylation of Hydrazones in Neutral and Reductive Modes

Boris A. van der Worp et al.

Summary: The visible light-promoted fluoroalkylation of hydrazones using 4-perfluoropyridine sulfides as fluoroalkyl radical sources was described. The process can proceed in neutral and reductive modes, delivering different products depending on the structure of starting substrates and reaction conditions. Ascorbic acid is used as a terminal reductant in the reductive process, recycling the photocatalyst and providing a source of hydrogen for nitrogen-centered radicals.

Boron Chelates Derived from N-Acylhydrazones as Radical Acceptors: Photocatalyzed Coupling of Hydrazones with Carboxylic Acids

Igor A. Dmitriev et al.

Summary: Difluoroboryl complexes derived from N-acyl hydrazones are efficient acceptors of alkyl radicals, reacting with carboxylic acids under the influence of an acridine-type photocatalyst to form N-acyl hydrazides. The efficiency of addition at the C=N bond of the chelates is determined by the stabilization of a nitrogen-centered radical by the boron-containing heterocyclic ring.

Photoredox Activation of Organozinc Reagents: Barbier-Type Reaction of Alkyl Halides with α-(Trifluoromethyl)styrenes

Anton A. Gladkov et al.

Summary: Organozinc reagents can generate alkyl radicals under blue light irradiation with an organic photocatalyst, leading to gem-difluorinated products by trapping the radicals with alpha-(trifluoromethyl)styrenes and eliminating fluoride. The reaction can be conveniently carried out under Barbier conditions starting from organic iodides and bromides and elemental zinc.

Alkylation of in situ generated imines via photoactivation of strong aliphatic C-H bonds

Serena Pillitteri et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the development of a broadly applicable strategy for the alkylation of in situ formed imines for the construction of functionalized secondary amines under mild reaction conditions. This atom economic transformation exploits the intrinsic electrophilicity of imines towards radical addition, and the fine-tuning of electronic properties of the starting materials allows the formation of a wide variety of products.

Radical philicity and its role in selective organic transformations

Faeze Parsaee et al.

Summary: Radical philicity, the ability of radicals to act as nucleophiles or electrophiles, is an important concept in organic chemistry. Traditionally, radicals are considered electron deficient, but the term "electron deficient" can imply electrophilicity in modern literature. This discrepancy has led to misconceptions about radical behavior, as many radicals actually exhibit nucleophilic behavior. This review aims to guide the understanding and prediction of radical philicity, demonstrating that not all radicals behave as electrophiles.
