Templated 2D Polymer Heterojunctions for Improved Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Catherine M. Aitchison et al.

Summary: 2D polymers are promising organic photocatalysts for solar fuel production due to their tunability, charge-transport properties, and robustness. However, their difficult processing limits the study of heterojunction materials incorporating these components. In this work, a novel templating approach is used to combine an imine-based donor polymer and an acceptor polymer formed through Knoevenagel condensation. The templated heterojunction exhibits significantly improved photocatalytic activity due to faster charge separation and more efficient charge extraction.

Photoreforming of Waste Polymers for Sustainable Hydrogen Fuel and Chemicals Feedstock: Waste to Energy

Muhammad Ashraf et al.

Summary: Renewable energy is crucial for environmental sustainability, and sunlight-driven fuel synthesis through water splitting is a sustainable and economical method. However, the water oxidation half-reaction in photocatalytic water splitting is challenging and requires designer photocatalysts. Photoreforming can address these challenges and convert waste plastics and biomass into valuable organic products for H2 production. This article provides an overview of photoreforming, including its mechanisms and the use of different polymer wastes as substrates for photocatalysts.

Metal-free carbon-based catalysts design for oxygen reduction reaction towards hydrogen peroxide: From 3D to 0D

Ding Zhang et al.

Summary: This review presents recent progress in different types of metal-free carbon-based catalysts for electrochemical production of H2O2. The fundamental aspects of the oxygen reduction reaction mechanism and performance evaluation are introduced. Catalysts with different dimensions, including 3D, 2D, 1D, and 0D, are reviewed. Strategies such as heteroatom doping, structural engineering, and defect engineering are examined for enhancing catalytic efficiency. Surface and interfacial engineering for high H2O2 production are discussed as well. Finally, challenges and opportunities in this field are proposed for the rational design of metal-free catalysts for electrochemical H2O2 production.

What does graphitic carbon nitride really look like?

Sigismund T. A. G. Melissen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conformational stability and optical properties of melon structures in graphitic carbon nitrides using DFT calculations. The results show that Fina's orthorhombic melon is the most stable conformer, with the lowest optical gap, while Lotsch's monoclinic melon falls in between. Both conformers exhibit optical gaps lower than the experimental value, suggesting potential aggregation effects.
