Solution-State Cooperative Luminescence Upconversion in Molecular Ytterbium Dimers

Lohona K. Soro et al.

Summary: Two homometallic ytterbium dimers were studied for their solution-state photoluminescence and upconversion properties. Both complexes displayed two-photon cooperative luminescence upconversion in the visible region (lambda(em) approximate to 510 nm) when excited at the near-infrared Yb F-2(5/2) <- F-2(7/2) absorption band at 980 nm. This miniaturization of the cooperative luminescence phenomenon to just two Yb ions provides conclusive evidence for the mechanistic origins of this process. Time-resolved measurements and excited-state modeling revealed a slow recombination of two singly excited ions Yb*Yb* into a virtual excited state, which ultimately resulted in the observed emission at approximate to 510 nm.

Engineering upconverting core-shell nano-probe for spectral responsive fluid velocimetry

Hai Huang et al.

Summary: Particle velocimetry based on upconversion luminescent nanocrystals allows for the measurement of fluid velocity. An engineered core-shell nano-probe is proposed to achieve sensitive monitoring of low-speed flow without the need for external calibration before each operation. This method has been successfully demonstrated in a fluid circulation system and shows excellent performance in handling spatially inhomogeneous velocity fields.

Upconversion Luminescence through Cooperative and Energy-Transfer Mechanisms in Yb3+-Metal-Organic Frameworks

Yao Xie et al.

Summary: Lanthanide-doped metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with upconversion luminescence were successfully synthesized by doping Yb-BTC MOF 1D microrods with Er3+, Ho3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+ ions. The MOFs exhibited both cooperative luminescence from Yb3+ and characteristic emission bands of the dopant ions. In contrast, the MOFs doped with Tm3+, Pr3+, Sm3+, and Dy3+ ions only showed the 497 nm upconversion emission band from Yb3+.

Significant Enhancement of the Upconversion Emission in Highly Er3+-Doped Nanoparticles at Cryogenic Temperatures

Langping Tu et al.

Summary: Relatively low efficiency is the bottleneck for the application of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles. The high-level doping strategy realized in recent years has not improved the efficiency as much as expected. This study combines theoretical simulation and spectroscopy to elucidate the role of cross relaxation (CR) in the upconversion process and demonstrates that inhibiting CR significantly improves upconversion efficiency.
