Bioinspired Integrated Auxetic Elastomers Constructed by a Dual Dynamic Interfacial Healing Strategy

Zhiran Zheng et al.

Summary: This study develops an integrated auxetic elastomer (IAE) that can exhibit transverse expansion while being axially stretched. By using high-modulus cross-linked poly(urethane-urea) as a skeleton and low-modulus non-cross-linked poly(urethane-urea) as a complementary-shape matrix, along with the dual dynamic interfacial healing promoted by disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds, the resulting IAE possesses flat, void-free, and sharp soft-to-hard interface-free characteristics. Moreover, the fracture strength and elongation at the break of the IAE are significantly improved compared to those of the corrugated re-entrant skeleton alone, while maintaining the negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) within a certain strain range. Finite element analysis further confirms the advantageous mechanical and auxetic properties of this elastomer.

Ruthenium -p- cymene complexes with acylthiourea, and its heterogenized form on graphene oxide act as catalysts for the synthesis of quinoxaline derivatives

Dharmalingam Sindhuja et al.

Summary: A series of half-sandwich Ru(II) complexes containing acylthiourea ligand were reported with well-characterized analytical and spectroscopic methods. The catalytic ability of Ru complexes in the synthesis of quinoxaline compounds via transfer hydrogenation approach was evaluated, and an active homogeneous catalyst was heterogenized by supporting it on graphene oxide. The heterogeneous catalyst showed good reusability up to five cycles without any loss in activity.

Understanding the physics of the auxetic response in a liquid crystal elastomer

Thomas Raistrick et al.

Summary: This study explains the physical mechanism behind the auxetic response of a uniaxial LCE under strain by the emergence of biaxial order, determined through Raman scattering and existing LCE theory. The key findings include the relationship between changing nematic order, mechanical Freedericksz transition, apparent semi-soft elasticity, and emergence of biaxial order in the LCE which explains the auxetic behavior. The study identifies important parameters for auxetic behavior in LCEs.

Freeze casting of porous monolithic composites for hydrogen storage

George M. Neville et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of utilizing the mechanical properties of hydrogen-adsorbent PIM-1 to create composite monoliths doped with high surface area activated carbon for use as pressure vessel inserts. By adapting freeze casting techniques for use with chloroform, the researchers were able to produce coherent and controlled three-dimensional geometries efficiently.
