Microstructure and cracking behavior of Ni3Al-based IC21 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

Haozhi Chai et al.

Summary: Understanding the microstructure formation and cracking behavior is crucial for the development and application of Ni3Al-based IC21 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) in the aeroengine field. In this study, SLM was used to prepare Ni3Al-based IC21 alloy samples, characterized by a unique microstructure with reduced primary dendrite arm spacing (PDAS) and aligned gamma and gamma' phases. Solidification cracking occurred at high angle grain boundaries (HAGB) enriched with elements Mo, Ta, and Re, and decreasing the content of Mo was found to eliminate cracks at grain boundaries.

Wire arc additive manufacturing of Ni-Al intermetallic compounds through synchronous wire-powder feeding

Yunfei Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method was proposed to solve the difficulty in wire arc additive manufacturing of Ni-Al intermetallic compounds (IMCs) caused by the brittle fracture in wire drawing. A synchronous wire-powder hybrid manufacturing technique using Ni wire as forming material and auxiliary filling Al powder was adopted. The effects of the amount of Al powder on the microstructure transformation, mechanical properties, and cracking tendency of deposited Ni-Al IMCs were investigated.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of twin wire and arc additive manufactured Ni3Al-based alloy

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Ni3Al-based alloy was successfully prepared by adjusting the feeding speed of Ni and Al wires in T-WAAM, leading to changes in microstructure and mechanical properties with increasing build height. The alloy at the bottom showed optimal mechanical properties, with tensile strength of 817.3 MPa and elongation of 20.9%. The study also found that the mechanical properties of the deposited alloy were equivalent to commercially available Ni3Al-based alloys IC218 and IC221M.

Alloys-by-design: Application to new superalloys for additive manufacturing

Yuanbo T. Tang et al.

Summary: New grades of gamma/gamma' nickel-based superalloy for the additive manufacturing process were designed using computational approaches, with processing trials carried out using powder-based selective laser melting. The superior processability and mechanical behaviour of the new alloys were demonstrated through microstructural characterisation, calorimetry and hot tensile testing. Suggestions for refinements to the modelling approach were also made.

Solidification microstructure and tensile deformation mechanisms of selective electron beam melted Ni3Al-based alloy at room and elevated temperatures

Y. Yao et al.

Summary: Selective electron beam melting (SEBM) was used to process crack-free Ni3Al-based IC21 alloy with similar to 85% gamma'-volume fraction. The segregation of Si to low melting point liquid films enhances the susceptibility to solidification cracking in IC21 produced by SEBM. Tensile specimens extracted from the crack-free IC21 samples exhibit superior properties at room temperature and 1000 degrees C, with different deformation mechanisms observed at these temperatures.

Microstructure characteristics of wire arc additive manufactured Ni-Al intermetallic compounds

Summary: The study investigated the fabrication of Ni-Al intermetallic compounds using wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology, showing that the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited samples were influenced by the nickel content. Increasing nickel content led to changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited samples.
