Microstructural Features and Microhardness of the Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Synthesized by Additive Plasma Wire Deposition Welding

Irina P. Semenova et al.

Summary: A new method using an ultrafine-grained wire is proposed to enhance the strength properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy synthesized by wire deposition welding. The microhardness of the alloy produced using the ultrafine-grained wire was found to be 20% higher than that produced using a conventional wire.

The Microstructural and Phase Evolution of the 3D Printed Ti-6Al-4V Alloy during Mechanical Loading

A. V. Panin et al.

Summary: This study presents the evolution of microstructure and phase composition of 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V samples under tension in the transmission electron microscope column. The microstructure consists of columnar primary beta-grains with alpha/alpha'-Ti laths separated by layers of residual beta-phase. The concentration nonuniformity of alloying elements and deformation-induced alpha'->alpha transformations can occur in vanadium-enriched regions.

Friction Stir Processing of Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Structure Modification and Mechanical Properties

Kirill Kalashnikov et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of using friction stir processing to improve the Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy material produced by wire-feed electron beam additive manufacturing. The results show that the material's structure and properties are sensitive to changes in the tool loading force, while the processing direction has little effect. Increasing the axial load affects the material's structure and strength. Friction stir processing can significantly increase the ultimate tensile strength of the material.

Transformations of the Microstructure and Phase Compositions of Titanium Alloys during Ultrasonic Impact Treatment Part II: Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Alloy

Alexey Panin et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies have revealed the microstructure formation patterns in the surface layer of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, including the mixed amorphous and nanocrystalline structures. Molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations have provided insights into the phase transformations during ultrasonic impact treatment, with a proposed mechanism associating the development of strain-induced transformations with the presence of oxygen.

The Superstrength of Nanostructured Metallic Materials: Their Physical Nature and Hardening Mechanisms

R. Z. Valiev et al.

Summary: Ultrafine grained (UFG) metallic materials obtained by severe plastic deformation (SPD) exhibit very high strength properties, which can be attributed to the formation of UFG structure as well as other nanostructural features such as dislocation substructures, nanotwins, and nanosized precipitates of second phases. In addition, the structure and condition of grain boundaries, including their nonequilibrium state and the presence of grain boundary segregations, significantly contribute to the hardening of materials. Various approaches are discussed in this study to achieve high strengths in metallic materials by SPD.

Summary: In this study, the thermal expansion properties of Ti6Al4V alloy deposited with direct energy subjected to severe plastic deformation through ECAP were investigated in the temperature range of 23-700 ?. The results showed that the ECAP process significantly refined the grain structure, leading to a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloy.

Effect of high pressure torsion process on the microhardness, microstructure and tribological property of Ti6Al4V alloy

Guanyu Deng et al.

Summary: The fully lamellar Ti6Al4V alloy was severely deformed using high pressure torsion (HPT) process, resulting in significant improvements in micro-hardness and grain size. The tribological properties of the alloy were investigated for the first time, showing a notable decrease in friction coefficient and specific wear rate with an increase in HPT revolutions. Overall, the HPT processed Ti6Al4V alloys displayed great potential in structural applications due to their enhanced mechanical and tribological properties.
