Embedded Pt-PVDF sensor without compromising mechanical properties of GFRP for on-line sensing

Fengjia Zhang et al.

Summary: A wide range of embedded sensors is currently used to monitor the structural health of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites. However, some studies have shown that embedding the sensors compromises the mechanical performance, while several studies have demonstrated minimal influence on static performance but not when embedded in the maximum stress area. This study presents the design of an embedded sensor based on a flexible piezoelectric film-polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) that does not sacrifice the static and fatigue mechanical performance of the composites. The PVDF sensor successfully monitors damage and fatigue evolution until failure, providing a reliable alternative for GFRP in structural health monitoring.

Boosting the piezoelectric coefficients of flexible dynamic strain sensors made of chemically-deposited ZnO nanowires using compensatory Sb doping

Jose Villafuerte et al.

Summary: Piezoelectric devices made of ZnO nanowires have attracted great interest as potential nanogenerators and sensors in the past decade. However, their characteristics are limited by the screening effect of the piezoelectric potential generated under mechanical solicitations. To address this issue, we developed the compensatory Sb doping of ZnO nanowires and achieved significant incorporation of Sb dopants.

Phased array ultrasonic inspection and automated identification of wrinkles in laminated composites

Haiyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method that combines phased array ultrasonic inspection and deep learning to detect and localize wrinkles in laminated composites. A convolutional neural network model is established to recognize wrinkles at different depths using the short-time Fourier transform of waveforms. The model training is accelerated through simulation in PZFlex, and achieves high accuracy in training and testing. This method simplifies the analysis of low signal to noise ratio, non resonance matching, and near field effect in ultrasonic inspection of composites, providing a reliable basis for efficient wrinkle detection automatically.

A review on the effects of input parameters & filler composition on delamination during machining of FRP composites

K. P. Aveen et al.

Summary: In the present era, the usage of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials is on the rise, especially in weight sensitive industries like Aerospace and Automobile. The drilling of FRP is challenging and can result in delamination, leading to rejection of laminates. Various analytical models and Finite Element Method have been used to study delamination during drilling of FRP composites, but a method to achieve delamination-free holes has not been identified yet. The role of process input parameters and fillers in reducing delamination in FRP is crucial.
