Arbovirus surveillance on the Mexico-USA border: West Nile virus identification in various species of field mosquitoes

Summary: West Nile virus (WNV) has been found in human and mosquito samples near the US-Mexico border, while no infected mosquitoes have been documented on the Mexican side. A study tested 367 mosquitoes of four species and found a high rate of WNV-positivity, including the first record of Ae. (Ochlerotatus) epactius infection. These findings highlight the need for enhanced WNV surveillance, vector control, and species monitoring in the border area.

Summary: Aedes aegypti, Ae albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus, three mosquito species of medical importance, were found coexisting in residential neighborhoods. Aedes aegypti was mostly present indoor houses, while Ae. albopictus and Cx. quinquefasciatus were mainly found in cemeteries. The identification and knowledge of their distribution are essential for entomological surveillance and prevention of vector-borne disease outbreaks.

Temporal and Spatial Synchronicity in West Nile Virus Cases Along the Central Flyway, USA

Summary: This study examined the avian transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) to explain the synchronicity in case numbers of WNV from Texas to the Dakotas and the high case numbers on the northern Great Plains. The study found spatial and temporal synchronicity in the Central Flyway states, with correlations ranging from 0.69 to 0.79. The concept of relative amplification was helpful in explaining the larger case numbers in northerly states along the Central Flyway compared to Texas.

Domestic Dogs as Sentinels for West Nile Virus but not Aedes-borne Flaviviruses, Mexico

Summary: The study tested 294 domestic pet dogs in Mexico for neutralizing antibodies for mosquito-borne flaviviruses, finding high exposure to West Nile virus in some areas and low exposure to Aedes-borne flaviviruses. Domestic dogs may serve as useful sentinels for monitoring West Nile virus.

Enhancement of Zika virus infection by antibodies from West Nile virus seropositive individuals with no history of clinical infection

Summary: The study found that serum samples from WNV antibody positive patients significantly enhanced ZIKV infection, while effectively neutralizing WNV and DENV infections. ZIKV specific sera demonstrated ADE at lower concentrations, and enhancement of ZIKV infection via WNV antibody positive sera was likely due to non-neutralizing Envelope (E) antibodies. Overall, the findings suggest that WNV antibodies in the sera significantly enhance ZIKV infection in Fc receptor positive cells with limited neutralization activity.

Surveillance for West Nile virus disease - United States, 2009-2018

Summary: West Nile virus (WNV) is a leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral disease in the United States. The disease is most commonly asymptomatic, but less than 1% of infected individuals develop severe neuroinvasive disease. Surveillance data from 2009-2018 show peaks in activity in different regions and suggest that predicting future incidence remains challenging. Public health actions focus on surveillance, prevention messaging for at-risk populations, and mosquito control measures to reduce disease morbidity and mortality.

While there have been advancements in equine vaccination, progress on human vaccines and treatments has been limited. Funding and research for WNV have declined in recent years, indicating neglect from policymakers and a lack of control measures.
