Polysaccharides and Their Derivatives as Potential Antiviral Molecules

Hadrien Claus-Desbonnet et al.

Summary: In the current COVID-19 pandemic, the scientific resources and medical community appear to be insufficient in combating the rapid global spread of viruses. Several epidemics caused by different viruses, such as dengue, chinkungunya, Ebola, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV, have occurred worldwide in recent years, highlighting the difficulty in treating an epidemic before the availability of vaccines. Existing antiviral drugs have limitations, including side effects and decreased effectiveness due to virus mutations. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new antiviral strategies using natural compounds, and polysaccharides have emerged as attractive candidates due to their therapeutic properties, low toxicity, and availability.
