Cognition in older adults with bipolar disorder: An ISBD task force systematic review and meta-analysis based on a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment

Laura Montejo et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, we found that cognitive dysfunction is present in euthymic older adults with bipolar disorder, with significant deficits in almost all cognitive domains, especially in the memory domain. This highlights the importance of including a routine complete neuropsychological assessment and considering therapeutic strategies for this population.

Neuronal underpinnings of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder: A large data-driven functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Summary: Cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder originates from the failure to recruit key regions in the cognitive control network (CCN) and to suppress task-irrelevant default mode network (DMN) activity during cognitive performance.

Influence of pre-treatment structural brain measures on effects of action-based cognitive remediation on executive function in partially or fully remitted patients with bipolar disorder

M. B. Mogensen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the predictive value of pre-treatment dorsal prefrontal cortex (dPFC) thickness on executive function improvement in bipolar disorder patients undergoing Action-Based Cognitive Remediation (ABCR). Results showed that smaller pre-treatment dPFC thickness was associated with greater improvement in executive function. Additionally, whole-brain vertex analysis revealed an association between smaller pre-treatment superior temporal gyrus volume and greater improvement in executive function due to ABCR.

Can magnetic resonance imaging enhance the assessment of potential new treatments for cognitive impairment in mood disorders? A systematic review and position paper by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Targeting Cognition Task Force

Kamilla W. Miskowiak et al.

Summary: This systematic review and position paper explores the use of neuroimaging in identifying brain-based efficacy markers for cognitive interventions. The findings suggest that increases in cognitive control network (CCN) activity are associated with cognitive improvements, while decreases in CCN activity without cognitive change and increased functional connectivity are also observed. In mood disorders, treatment-related default mode network (DMN) suppression occurs. These findings indicate that modulation of CCN and DMN activity may serve as potential efficacy biomarkers for cognitive treatments.

Cognitive subgroups in first episode bipolar I disorder: Relation to clinical and brain volumetric variables

Trisha Chakrabarty et al.

Summary: Distinct cognitive subgroups are observable in patients with long duration bipolar I disorder, possibly reflecting underlying pathophysiological differences. The study applied latent class analysis to cognitive test scores in first episode BDI patients to identify cognitive heterogeneity at illness onset. Results showed a globally impaired subgroup possibly characterized by unique neurodevelopmental pathologic processes.

Structural brain abnormalities associated with cognitive impairments in bipolar disorder

Julian Macoveanu et al.

Summary: The study found that cognitive impairment in BD is associated with cerebral white matter deficits, possibly related to observed morphological changes in dorsomedial PFC, possibly due to increased neurocognitive effort to maintain symptom stability in these remitted patients.
