Deconstructing pathways to resilience: A systematic review of associations between psychosocial mechanisms and transdiagnostic adult mental health outcomes in the context of adverse childhood experiences

Treatment efficacy and effectiveness in adults with major depressive disorder and childhood trauma history: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This comprehensive meta-analysis found that patients with major depressive disorder, even with a history of childhood trauma, can significantly improve symptoms after pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. Evidence-based psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy should be offered to these patients regardless of childhood trauma status.

Childhood trauma and adult mental disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal cohort studies

Summary: The review of various studies shows a significant association between childhood or adolescent exposure to bullying, emotional abuse, family violence, and parental loss, and the development of mental disorders in adulthood. Exposure to multiple forms of maltreatment was found to increase the odds of developing a mental disorder by more than three times. Childhood and adolescence are highlighted as critical periods for the risk of later mental illness and important time frames for intervention strategies.

Summary: The Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA) is a long-term research project aiming to study the causes, development, and consequences of depression and anxiety disorders. Through face-to-face assessments repeated six times over 9 years, a total of 3348 participants including individuals with depressive and/or anxiety disorders, their siblings, and healthy controls were recruited. The data collected have been utilized for numerous scientific papers and are available to researchers outside the NESDA consortium.

Trait anger expression mediates childhood trauma predicting for adulthood anxiety, depressive, and alcohol use disorders

Summary: This study found that childhood maltreatment predicts elevated adulthood major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and alcohol use disorder. Trait anger partially mediated these relationships, explaining 14-50% of the variance. The results highlight the importance of considering trauma-informed care in theoretical and clinical practices.
