Vegetation increases abundances of ground and canopy arthropods in Mediterranean vineyards

Chloe Blaise et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of vegetation cover and soil management on the abundance of arthropods in vineyards and finds that decreasing soil perturbation and increasing vegetation cover positively affect arthropod abundance. Plant species richness is the most important vegetation parameter, with a positive effect on arthropod abundance.

Ecological Infrastructures May Enhance Lepidopterans Predation in Irrigated Mediterranean Farmland, Depending on Their Typology and the Predator Guild

Jose Carlos Franco et al.

Summary: Ecological infrastructures (EIs) are important components in agricultural landscapes for supporting biodiversity and ecosystem services. Using lepidopteran dummies as a proxy, we found that different types of EIs have different effects on predator groups and overall predation rates.

Changes in daily rainfall and temperature extremes of upper Awash Basin, Ethiopia

Haftu Brhane Gebremichael et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in rainfall and temperature extremes in Upper Awash Basin, Ethiopia. The findings indicate a decline in average rainfall trends in the basin, but an increase in rainfall and extreme events in the eastern portion. Most weather stations showed increasing trends in maximum and minimum temperatures. The findings have important implications for stakeholders in the region.

Decreasing predation rates and shifting predator compositions along a land-use gradient in Madagascar's vanilla landscapes

Dominik Schwab et al.

Summary: Land-use change in north-eastern Madagascar drives deforestation and land degradation, leading to biodiversity loss. Vanilla cultivation in agroforestry systems shows potential for biodiversity conservation. Predation rates were highest in old-growth forests, decreasing with land-use intensity. Forested habitats featured different predator compositions and higher predation rates compared to other land-use types. Vanilla agroforestry may be a valuable tool in landscape conservation but has limited value in conserving forest-specialized predator communities.
