Theory of history-dependent multi-layer generalized stacking fault energy- A modeling of the micro-substructure evolution kinetics in chemically ordered medium-entropy alloys

Peijun Yu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a chemical order related concept of history-dependent multi-layer generalized stacking fault energy and validates it using a neural network interatomic potential. The impacts of history dependence and interlayer coupling effect on the alloy structure are demonstrated by computing the fault energy for different shear deformation pathways.

Modeling the effect of short-range order on cross-slip in an FCC solid solution

Anas Abu-Odeh et al.

Summary: This study used atomistic simulations to investigate the influence of short-range ordering (SRO) on cross-slip in single-phase face-centered cubic solid solution alloys. Results showed that the activation barriers for cross-slip depend on the state of SRO in the alloy and the presence of anti-phase boundaries in the slip plane, indicating an increase in cross-slip energy barrier with the onset of SRO and a reduction in dynamic recovery.

Screw dislocation mobility in a face-centered cubic solid solution with short-range order

Anas Abu-Odeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of short-range ordering (SRO) on screw dislocation mobility in Ni-10%Al alloy using molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal that the onset of SRO leads to a change in the threshold stress and a decrease in damping in the linear regime of dislocation velocity and shear stress. The presence of a diffuse anti-phase boundary (DAPB) reduces the stress threshold for dislocation motion without significantly affecting the linear damping at the temperatures studied.

Short-range order localizing diffusion in multi-principal element alloys

Bin Xing et al.

Summary: The impact of chemical short-range order (SRO) on diffusion in multi-principal elements alloys is computationally studied and theoretically analyzed. It is found that the presence of SRO considerably reduces and localizes vacancy-mediated diffusion, which is induced by an increase of migration barrier and enhanced diffusion correlation. The results imply that controlling the ordering in chemistry can potentially manipulate diffusional behaviors in multi-principal elements alloys.

Revealing the crucial role of rough energy landscape on self-diffusion in high-entropy alloys based on machine learning and kinetic Monte Carlo

Biao Xu et al.

Summary: This study reveals the control mechanism of self-diffusion in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) using machine learning models and kinetic Monte Carlo methods. It demonstrates that the self-diffusion in HEAs is predominantly governed by the roughness of the potential energy landscape characterized by elemental-specific site energies and migration barriers. The study further identifies the atomic concentrations of fast-diffusing elements and the differences in the averaged migration barriers for different species as the dominant factors influencing sluggish diffusion in HEAs.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to predict diffusion behavior in multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs). The developed CNN model accurately and efficiently predicts migration energy barriers for MPEAs with different degrees of chemical short-range order and unseen compositions. The research reveals the extensive influence of length scale on vacancy migration, which is significant for accelerating alloy screening and discovering new compositions.

A local stacking fault energy model for concentrated alloys

Carlyn R. LaRosa et al.

Summary: A simple bond energy model is proposed to accurately predict the average stacking fault energy (SFE) in concentrated solid-solution alloys. The SFE is approximated using the energy difference of relevant bulk phases, and the bond energies are used to determine the SFE distribution within a given alloy system, avoiding the computational cost and limitations of stacking fault supercell calculations.

Chemical short-range order in body-centered-cubic TiZrHfNb high-entropy alloys

Bozhao Zhang et al.

Summary: Through detailed density functional theory-based Monte Carlo simulations, we have explored the characteristic chemical short-range order (CSRO) in the TiZrHfNb alloy, a representative body-centered-cubic refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA). The preference for Ti-Zr and Nb-Hf nearest-neighbor environments was observed, leading to the formation of (Ti,Zr,O)-enriched ordered complexes. Additionally, small but noticeable changes in key material parameters, such as elastic moduli, misfit volume, and predicted yield strength, were reported due to the presence of CSROs, providing valuable structure-property information for enhancing the design of highly concentrated HEA solid solutions.

Chemical short range order strengthening in BCC complex concentrated alloys

E. Antillon et al.

Summary: Atomistic methods were used to anneal two BCC chemically complex alloys to evaluate the effect of chemical short-range order on alloy strength. It was found that annealing led to a softening of the BCC quaternary alloy but had minimal effect on solid solution strengthening in the ternary alloy. Results were modeled using an extension of the Suzuki model of substitutional solid solution strengthening, with good agreement between the model results and direct atomistic simulation data.
