Non-local large-strain FFT-based formulation and its application to interface-dominated plasticity of nano-metallic laminates

Miroslav Zecevic et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new formulation and numerical implementation of a strain-gradient crystal plasticity model within a large-strain elasto-viscoplastic fast Fourier transform-based micromechanical model. The model is used to study the formation of kink bands during layer-parallel compression of nano-metallic laminates. The interaction between dislocations and interfaces is considered in the model to accurately simulate the behavior of the layered composites.

Simultaneous High-Strength and Deformable Nanolaminates With Thick Biphase Interfaces

Summary: By broadening heterophase interfaces into 3D interfaces, the strength-ductility trade-off of two-phase nanolaminates can be overcome. The 3D interfaces prevent flow instability and shear localization by interacting with dislocation pileups.

New large-strain FFT-based formulation and its application to model strain localization in nano-metallic laminates and other strongly anisotropic crystalline materials

Miroslav Zecevic et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new robust formulation based on Fast Fourier Transforms for the prediction of the micro-mechanical response and microstructure evolution of polycrystalline and multiphase materials. It takes into account the effect of anisotropy on plastic deformation localization and allows treatment of complex initial geometries and large deformations. The formulation is validated and applied to various materials, showing good agreement with experimental results.

Shear strain gradient in Cu/Nb nanolaminates: Strain accommodation and chemical mixing

Xiaolong Ma et al.

Summary: Disentangling the contribution of intragranular and interfacial plasticity is crucial for understanding the overall strain accommodation in nanoscale materials. Researchers introduced shear strain gradients to Cu/Nb nanolaminates and found that intragranular slip dominates deformation in thick laminates, while it contributes significantly to plasticity in thin laminates. Additionally, forced chemical mixing was observed in the top region of the thin laminates.

Tensile and failure behaviors of Cu/Nb nanolaminates: the effects of loading direction, layer thickness, and annealing

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: Nano metallic laminates (NMLs) show exceptional strengths, but limited ductility under tension. By conducting mesoscale tension tests, it is found that annealing at 800 degrees C significantly enhances the ductility and work hardenability of NMLs.

Kink mechanism in Cu/Nb nanolaminates explored by in situ pillar compression

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation process and mechanism of kink band (KB) in Cu/Nb nano metallic laminates (NMLs). It is found that the inhomogeneous microstructure plays a key role in the formation of KB, leading to the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and the formation of tilt geometrically necessary boundaries (GNBs) near KB boundaries (KBBs). Furthermore, once the layer-parallel slip systems are activated, preexisting lattice dislocations and dislocations nucleating from interfaces will accumulate as GNDs near KBBs, promoting the evolution of KB.

Evolution of microstructures and properties leading to layer instabilities during accumulative roll bonding of Fe-Cu, Fe-Ag, and Fe-Al

Rodney J. McCabe et al.

Summary: The evolution of microstructures and properties of bi-metallic laminates during cold accumulative roll bonding is influenced by both material properties and layer locations. Layer instabilities occur when there is a significant difference in hardness between Fe and fcc metals, signaling the need for processing changes once the strength ratio approaches two.

Enhancing co-deformation ability of nanograined Ni-W layers in the Ni/Ni-W laminated composites

Fei Liang et al.

Summary: The tensile properties and plastic deformation behavior of Ni/Ni-W laminated composites were investigated with different thickness ratios of the Ni layer to the Ni-W layer. Increasing the thickness ratio improved the strength/ductility synergy due to enhanced co-deformation ability of nanograined Ni-W layers. Thinning of Ni-W layers with small original thickness was achieved through stable grain boundary sliding under interface constraint, leading to a transition in fracture behavior as the Ni-W layer thickness decreased.
