A review of the metastable omega phase in beta titanium alloys: the phase transformation mechanisms and its effect on mechanical properties

JoAnn Bailor et al.

Summary: The omega phase in titanium and its alloys has been a subject of research interest since its discovery in 1954. The debate on the transformation mechanisms, particularly the beta-to-omega and omega-to-alpha phase transformations in beta-titanium alloy design, continues. Advanced characterization methods have led to improved spatial resolution and compositional sensitivity in phase transformation analysis.

The effect of sample size on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti2448 (Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn wt%)

N. L. Church et al.

Summary: Ti-Nb based alloys are commercially important due to their damping capabilities. The consistency of the starting microstructure affects the reversibility of the transformation. The thickness of the material influences the microstructures and behaviors, with a single-phase layer in thin material promoting more recoverable transformation behavior.

On the role of internal stresses on the superelastic behaviour of Ti-24Nb (at.%)

E. M. Hildyard et al.

Summary: Ti-Nb-based alloys exhibit superelasticity and shape memory behaviors due to a martensitic transformation. There are significant variations in reported martensite start temperatures within the literature. In situ studies have confirmed the validity of a stress-based mechanism for explaining the transformation behavior of Ti-24Nb in the cold rolled condition.

Tuning thermal expansion by a continuing atomic rearrangement mechanism in a multifunctional titanium alloy

D. L. Gong et al.

Summary: Thermal training is crucial for multifunctional titanium alloys to adjust their thermal expansion from positive to negative, resulting in a stable novel linear expansion over a wide temperature range. The Ti-Nb based alloy with nanoscale microstructure exhibits linear crystal structure parameter variation with temperature, which is unusual for typical shape memory alloys.

The effect of quench rate on the β-α martensitic transformation in Ti-Nb alloys

E. L. Pang et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that only the fastest quench rates (around 500 degrees C/s or higher) can form the α" phase in Ti-24Nb alloy, which exhibits a reversible thermally-induced beta-alpha '' transformation at low temperatures. Slightly slower quench rates lead to a beta+omega microstructure, without a thermally-induced beta-alpha '' transformation.

On the Influence of Thermal History on the Martensitic Transformation in Ti-24Nb-4Zr-8Sn (wt%)

N. L. Church et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the sensitivity of metastable beta titanium alloys to thermal history, leading to large variations in the stable range of superelastic behavior. The theory of omega formation suppressing the martensitic transformation is questioned, and an alternative mechanism based on a total stress approach is suggested.
